anjinholuis - there was a thread recently in the newbie section that mentioned travel insurance for long term cover. I dont have the link, but a search through the first 2/3 pages of the newbie forum might find it. It could be taken out whilst in country and was quite reasonable I think.

Chris - I could be wrong (after all I have only seen a few contracts) but medical insurance isnt often included as far as I am aware? I think the big chains like EF offer it, but any other insurance I have seen, or discussed with my fellow FTs on campus, is normally very minimal and wouldnt cover anything of real value. I was with several long term China FTs in Hainan, and all had their own medical insurance for major cover, repatriation etc.

Of course, there is technically nothing to stop FTs from taking out their own private medical insurance from home if they so wish, provided that they are satisfied with the terms and conditions therein and the premiums that they have to pay.

I have, throughout my eight years in China, never felt the need to avail myself of anything other than what my three full-time employers (so far) have offered to me and my fellow FTs in terms of medical insurance - just as long as we're not tempted to poke out one of our own eyes deliberately in order to get the money!

It is a legal requirement that your employer provide you with medical insurance.

From your interesting replys, I can then assume that the Medical Examination for the FEC will be paid by the UNI.

I will need to find out what else they cover. Rolling Eyes

I was hired by Angelina's so I need to get on to them as well.

anjinholuis, if you arrived on a z-visa, it should have '000' in the blank after
"Duration." That doesn't mean that it is for endless duration. The embassy clerk should have told you and/or possibly put a removable sticker on your visa that reads something to the effect that you must acquire a residence permit or exit China within 30 days of your entry. At the very least, your passport should be in the hands of the PSB with a pending RP when that thirty days is up. Your school is liable for anything from a stern lecture on up but you are not absolved by their negligence. You are subject to a fine of 500 RMB per day if you overstay. (Someone correct me if I am wrong.)

You must light a fire under your schools FAO to get you to their approved medical clinic right away for a medical exam. It will be at least a few days before the results are back. Maybe more if you have to travel to the capital city/major city to take the exam. Really, don't waste time and get on your FAO's case. They may be nice but if they don't know what they are doing, you will be held responsible. Fair has nothing to do with it. Are there other foreign teachers at your school? Ask them what steps they went through.
