I keep seeing the occcassional mention of people on here who are planning on going to Tokyo in March/April/May time of next year, and wanted to create a thread where everyone who is doing this could say so, and maybe make plans to meet up.
I'm going in March myself, and I'll be going alone. I've never lived alone before (discounting uni) or in a foreign country, and I can't believe I'm the only one who's a little apprehensive about making friends and meeting people. So this purpose of this thread is to co-ordinate a "group" of sorts, made up of people heading to Tokyo next year.
Please reply with a little info about yourself if you want to "participate". Similarly, if you already live in Tokyo and want to make new Western friends, please feel free to add your own info or add a post.

Hi. I'll be arriving in March to the Kanto region, not sure where but no more than an hour or so from Tokyo. I'll be working as an ALT. I've lived in Asia for 2.5 years (Korea) doing the same job and have been to Japan before, so I'm not really a newbie to this thing aside from the living in Japan aspect.
I've also been living on my own since I was 16 (I'm 25 now) so I can imagine how difficult it will be to be out of the nest for the first time in a foreign country. Just remember, follow the rules, respect your neighbours and don't obsess over mistakes!
PM me for my MSN if you want to chat.
(I'm also your classic nerd--not geek. I prefer puzzles and brain muscles over collecting and hording, hehe) |

Why limit yourself to just people in the Tokyo area? Try and get to know people further a field. Then you'll have people to act as tour guide and places to crash when you go travelling in your breaks.
Tokyo is all well and good, but when you live there, you are going to want to get away from all the hustle and bustle of big city life occasionally. And Japan has a lot else to offer.

I'm not saying people should limit themselves to Tokyo, but mainly use it as a "base". Many eikawas seem to be in Tokyo, and most newbies seem to be going to them.

Hello! I will be going to the Kanto area the beginning of March to begin training with ECC! I'm really excited.
I've lived in Japan before (I studied abroad there) and loved it so much that I really wanted to go back. I'm going to be teaching there for a year or two before going to law school. A lot of friends that I made at school at my home university and while studying abroad are currently in Japan, so I'm really excited about being able to see them all again. I minored in Japanese, so I plan on taking Japanese classes while there because there is still so much more for me to learn.
I'm looking forward to making new friends! |

I'll be arriving in March to be an ALT... hopefully. I have been hired, but things are going so slowly that I'm constantly paranoid the company is going to back out and leave me in the dust. Has anybody had that happen even after being hired?
Why I'm going: To improve my Japanese so I can pass the level 1 JLPT. Right now my reading and writing are great, but my listening and conversational skills are lacking, and the best way for me to fix that is to actually be in Japan!
My interests: Reading, painting, cooking/baking, video games, fitness, blogging, music... all that stuff. |

I'm not going to Tokyo, but I'll reply anyway.
I'm going to be in Chuba/Nagoya area for training in March. So far I've been doing reseach on the area, and am surprised to see that there are EIGHT Hard Rock Cafes in Nagoya!!!! (I just find that amusing.)
I'm going to Japan to travel, explore, learn, & have an adventure. I have a friend who has been teaching in Osaka for about 5 years. and he loves it. I also actually like to teach, and am just about to get my teaching certification. But I figured, what the hell, I'll give it a shot in Japan first.
Anyone else heading to Nagoya? |

Where did you find this? There are only eight HRCs in all of Japan. |

I saw it on virtualtourist.com. Maybe the guy meant 8 in ALL of Japan, but he was talking about them like they were all in Nagoya |

I will be in Japan studying Japanese in 2010, then Argentina learning Spanish in 2011. After that, Arabic in Morocco. Who's coming with me? |
