Some beautiful and/or interesting places I've spent time in, and might want to live in:
Florianopolis, southern Brazil.
(Brazil has other beautiful, beautiful places of course).
Dali, Yunnan Province, China. (Wonderfully laid back. Not right up in the mountains, but some very pleasant hiking and cycling around the local villages, lakes, mountain scenery. The tourist hordes are growing all around this region (see: Lijiang), so I can't put this so high on my list).
Valparaiso, Chile (a beautiful little coastal town but a bit rundown if you're looking for the finer things in life. Great if you like avocadoes and Chilean wine. On the pacific coast, an hour or two's drive from Tres Puntas, spectacular skiing in the middle of the Andes. Short drive to Santiago which isn't the best city in the world but has some cool nightlife).
Pokhara, Nepal. Is it still as fanastic as it was in 1992? I know Nepal has a turbulent recent history
If you have an aesthetic sense at all, it's very difficult not to mention some of the great European cities, whether it be Rome, Paris, London etc. You could have a great quality of life in any of them if you were seriously wealthy. But we are not bankers so let's forget about that
I was surprised that the south of France had not yet been mentioned. To misquote Johnson, he who is tired of French culture ... (and we will just have to ignore the peanut gallery of Anglophone francophobes...)
Is anyone a fan of Australia? I only visited fleetingly but I felt that Sydney was like a slightly better version of London. And similarly expensive
If money were no object I would probably live somewhere in the France-Spain-Italy region. A more teacherly way of thinking - somewhere in Eastern Europe, with some of the same elements of lifestyle but lower cost. The biggest issue is the red tape that a country has, if you want to be there not as a worker, and for a longer period of time. |

I'm still looking for it!
I have been an expat for twenty two years and lived in eight different countries but I think Australia may be the 'perfect' place, for me. |

Potosi, Bolivia.
(wouldn't fancy living in Pokhara - the boating would become a bore very quickly).

Like Nabby Adams, I also don't like to think of myself as living any one place for the rest of my life. I guess I'd want to just keep travelling for quite a while (hey, money's no object, remember?), visiting and living in a bunch of places. My list is way too long, hence, I started this thread to try to narrow it down a bit.
So far, these are places I'd love to hang out in for a while...(in no particular order):
Trinidad & Tobago
Bahamas
Cayman Islands
Puerto Rico
Cuba (someday)
New York City
SF Bay Area
Southern California
Missoula, Montana
Scottsdale, Sedona, Flagstaff - Arizona
Honolulu
Montreal
Toronto
Vancouver
Sydney
Melbourne
Gold Coast Australia
Auckland
Tahiti
Fiji
Bali
Singapore
Thailand (Chiang Mai?)
Luang Prabang, Laos
Siem Riep & Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Saigon, Hanoi & Nha Trang, Vietnam
China: Beijing, Dalian, Shanghai, Yangshuo, Dali, Lijiang, Kunming, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau
Taiwan: Taipei, Taichung
Korea: well, maybe not again
Japan: Fukuoka, Sapporo, Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Tokyo
India: ?
Nepal: ?
Bhutan: ?
Central Asia: famous silk road cities (someday)
Persia: Isfahan, Shiraz, Teheran, ? (again, maybe someday)
Turkey: Istanbul, Izmir
U.A.E.: Dubai, Abu Dhabi
Oman: Muscat
Lebanon: Beirut
Israel: Tel Aviv
Morocco: Marrakech
Europe: London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Galway, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Amsterdam, Munich, Vienna, Zurich, Paris, Geneve, Monaco, Florence, Rome, Sevilla, Barcelona, Prague
Latin America: Oaxaca, Morelia, Cuernavaca, Mexico City, Los Cabos, Isla Mujeres, Bogota, Cartagena, Quito, Lima, Cuzco, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Rio, Florianopolis, Punta Del Este (Uruguay)
Africa: ? I've met some beautiful women from Ethiopia, Somalia, Gabon... but I don't know... I hear the food is pretty atrocious in Africa, and I'm a bit of a foodie...
As you can see, I need a little help in narrowing this list - it's rather unwieldly. |
Hey, way to narrow it down!
Hope you get to see all those places, that's quite a list! |
Yeah, way to screw ppl's search results with an entirely pointless hit |

Something about Malta appeals to me as a place to live. Mediterranean climate, they speak English, and one of the best healthcare systems in the world. I really should go there sometime...
In terms of places I've been, somewhere nice and quiet next to the beach in Thailand would be a definite option, although only if I had a considerably solid chunk of cash in the bank, as eeking out a living on a farang's ESL wage does not appeal at all.
The Dordogne region in France would be nice too, all that lovely food and wine... |

Somewhere were I can have 4 seasons again, without the cold winters.
Thailand is either hot or hotter or wet or wetter. |

Ah, there's no place like home - which, come to think on it, is probably one of the big reasons most of us became EFLers in the first place.

I like southern France too, but being an American, a work visa is hard to come by. Not sure also how many school salaries would support a good life style there, but I'm sure living as a local would reduce some of the costs. My wife and I particularly like the Luberon area in Provence. |
