How much will it cost to rent a modest house/apartment in northern Bandung? I'm trying to avoid a kost if at all possible. |

You can get a nice, smallish house for about Rp6-12 million/year |

A decent apartment would cost you around 22 million per month. Some decent apartments are: Setiabudi aparment, ciumbuleuit and the one at Surya Sumantri road. Other than those above suck

I don't believe there are any apartments in northern Bandung. Assuming we mean the area continuing north from the Dago angkot terminal?
Rp22 million/month also sounds ridiculously expensive for anywhere in Bandung. You could get a luxurious, fully serviced apartment in central Jakarta for that price. |

Hello,
I'm terribly sorry I gave you the wrong info. I was referring you to the apartment in Jakarta which is, of course, very expensive.
As far as I remember, you can rent a studio apartment in Bandung for around 11 to 14 million per month. I have a friend who used to stay in Setiabudi Apartment on Setiabudi Street in Bandung and paid the same monthly rental fee.
If you wanna stay at Majesty Apartment, which is close to Bandung International School the rental fee is appr. 11 mil/month, and at Setiabudi apartment is around 14 mil/month. Setiabudi is located at northern Bandung.
While if you're looking for apartment at Dago area, the only apartment I could suggest is near Babakan Siliwangi (I forget what the name is), but I guess the rental fee is around the same amount, too, and that's the closest one to Dago Terminal (around 5 min.)
There are no other apartment near Dago terminal
Avoid staying in a 'kost' as it's very uncomfortable and very noisy. |

this is really what i was hoping for.. something around 8-15 million per year in the dago area. i'm very glad to know that this might be possible. i was worried it would end up costing me 25-35 million per year. |

Matt, yes 12 or so per year sounds possible. Recognize that means paying the full amount upfront and you'll need to pay all costs for utilities, internet, possibly repairs should anything occur.
As for vema123's comment about kost living, I slightly disagree, but probably because this is I have been living in a good one for the last year. 1.3 juta covers my furnished room with private bath, hot water, wireless internet, cable tv, 24-hour security and laundry. Good kost mates, mostly students who are quiet and respectful. Only drawback is limited cooking area. I agree that some kosts can be a horrible experience, but at least the one I have has turned out to be very good.
A house will give you much more privacy, but many more responsibilities.
You also should build in your transport time to your school to a cost/benefit analysis. |

I rent a really nice house just outside the Bandung area for 15.5 million/year. You have to pay a year upfront, the rest of the bills (electric, water, security, garbage pickup etc) are payed monthly & are relatively inexpensive. The house has a gated front yard, small enclosed backyard & garden, roof top seating area, 2 floors, 6 bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen etc. It takes time to find places, we stayed in a kost for 2 months before we found a good house. Good luck in your search! |

out of curiosity, what kind of house would 6-12 juta buy in dago? one-two bedrooms? furnished/unfurnished? a/c, fridge, appliances, etc. |

1 or 2 bedrooms depending on where it falls in the price range. Most homes are unfurnished. Although you could furnish a small one with a bed, sofa, wardrobe and white goods for less than Rp10 million. |

I rented a house for a year in this area, known locally as kampung bule. Just a pleasant 15minute walk from the bus terminal.
I paid 6million for the year, and another 3million to paint the house, repair the many faults, replace the termite ruined door frame and kitchen bench, install a heated shower and lots more. These figures are some years old now. I also had to buy a small fridge, bench top gas cooker, a 2nd bottle of LPG. Not so cheap. EF in Jakarta had provided a furnished house for a nominal rent.
However, a colleague of mine, married to an Indonesian lady, got her to rent a place, and it was half what I paid and very similar. So yes, there is a price for foreigners. My 6 million also included a spotting fee or two.
In my opinion, the school you're working for should be able to do some hunting and negotiating, but they often don't/won't.
No-one else has mentioned it, but it is/was a magnet for those looking for easy money, and I paid for my housekeeper/gardener to start before I left for school and stayed until 9pm. |
