We were 14 new teachers at Nizwa College last year and eight of us bought cars. One teacher decided on paying back the loan over only 24 months and he's paying about the same per month as for a car rental. Paying back the loan over 4 years, your montly cost is considerably lower than if you're renting.

We were told that you can drive on your UK licence for 3 months AFTER you receive your residence card.

They are already preparing for the Ramadan special offers here at Toyota in Nizwa. I think they include one year free insurance and five years (or 100,000 km) of free service.

Thanks everyone but as I still have not heard from the powers that be after handing in my papers, the question may be moot.

The worst thing about Oman is the crazy drivers.

Why do they do it?

The same reason that adolescents (usually male) the world over drive recklessly. The psychologists have their answer... sexual immaturity.

Ever heard of In'shallah??

Have you never seen 4X4's full of families, young kids sitting on the dashboard while smiling "daddy" drives all, over the road whilst answering his mobile? NO?

It will never change, even if there are multi crashes killing families. Why?

Because Allah will look after them, they will go to paradise regardless what damage they do to other drivers and their families and friends.

Defensive driving is the only way.

Unfortunately S**t happens, just more on the ME roads.

Male driver... I still agree with the psychologists... age doesn't guarantee maturity. Crying or Very sad

The "insha'Allah" attitude just makes it worse.

Is it possible to drive a car out of Oman and keep in legally-- say, in France or Germany or India? Are the emissions standards & so on very different?

Maybe India...

I know that they require significant work to be tagged in the US to meet pollution standards. I believe that Europe is just as, if not more, stringent than the US. You would need to check with the government where you are going.

Cars tend to be cheap in the Gulf compared to the US or Europe since there are few taxes on them, so it may be worth paying to make them legal. In Europe that is, add in shipping to the US, and it isn't really financially sensible.
