thanks for these answer. most of what i want to know is being covered, but obviously as questions are being answered, i think of even more questions! if you don't mind indulging me a little further...

is it usual to have to teach at more than one school a day? how many? do they allocate reasonable travel time between the schools?

many of you seem rather bitter - how long have you been working for Shane/Saxoncourt? overall, how happy are you with the experience, when you weigh up the fact that this job allows you to live in Japan?

also, i know the accommodation is small, but, given that you don't have to pay key money or an agency fee as you do with other places, is really all that bad? i'm hoping to find a place for two people - anyone live in one of these? can anyone offer an opinion on them?

as much as i love Japan, i am anxious about going to a new place alone. how hard is it to meet and make friends, particularly with other ex pats or fluently English people?

maybe the most important question is, do you feel you have enough time to do prep? some of you may have experience with TEFL before Saxoncourt etc. for myself, i've worked two jobs in England, one part time, one one full time. the part time class was with teenagers for an hour and a half followed by another class for the same time. the full time job was 2 sets of 3 hour classes with a 20 minute break throughout. it was tight, but i found it manageable. bearing in mind that I'm still relatively new to TEFL, does Saxoncourt provide enough time for prep for its classes?

once again, a big thank you, all this info is incredibly helpful, and i hope people in the future who have questions can benefit from it too. maybe it should be a sticky after all?

Thanks for the answers.

I can keep asking questions til the cows come home if people still want to answer them though.

Not usually, but don't be surprised if it happens; especially on a Saturday if you're in Tokyo.

I quit a few years ago, but still keep in contact. Do it for a year or two and then go home. You'll probably have fun overall.

Look up Leo Palace on the internet. That's what Shane, and most other English companies, uses. It's pretty small for two people. I can't give firsthand information about what Shane does with the accommodation situation, because I've always had my own place.

This has been asked a million times on a million ESL forums. It all depends on you, in the end. How's your social life now (rhetorical question)?

There usually isn't enough prep time. If students call in to complain that they don't think the teacher was prepared enough, this is one of the complaints they just ignore. Your DOS, if you work at Shane, knows this very well.

You just asked the same question twice. See my answer above.

Most of these questions have already been answered in the stickies, or in numerous other threads. I'm just answering you because I'm bored at work (not Shane)! Glad you found it helpful.

Rare, although I have heard of it with perhaps two schools.

Interesting, isn't it Smile

Overall I have no regrets. I made the best choice I could at the time, and I'm in Japan. It works for now. It's been a learning experience.

Given your experience, you'll probably be ok. And I think in this line of work it's pretty average.

Shiori

I used to teach in two schools on one day for a few months. It was painless enough - the two schools were quite close together, and the teaching load was light at each, to make up for it.

It's excellent for teachers if the standby system has gone. That really used to ruin days off. Could someone who knows say what they do instead - presumably they have some way of covering teachers who phone in sick unexpectedly.

I would post more, but my info is years out of date. I had an OK time at Shane.

God, I had an interview with them on Monday, and waiting for them to call tomorrow. I applied for their part-time position which after two years of being an ALT, it's all I can stomach nowadays. I'll have to see what they say when they call.

I'm kicking myself for not passing the JLPT before coming here. I certainly could have found a better non-English teaching job!
