I'm 48 years old and want to teach English in Taiwan. I am slim with a full head of hair, though unfortunately and unstoppably turning a little gray. I have a Master's in Art History, teaching experience in Korea and a TEFL certificate. I've been intending to fly over and search for work. Think my age will be a problem? -Dan |

as you know, with age comes some good stuff like wisdom and patience. if you are willing to exercise these two attributes there is no reason why you shouldn't do well here.
best wishes. |

Thanks for the encouragement. I've been looking forward to returning to Asia to teach. I have read some disturbing posts on different sites about the difficulty of working over 40. Maybe the key is to first show up in person so employers aren't misled by the dates on my resume. |

Hello.
A friend of mine recently left Taiwan after teaching here for over two years. He just turned 59. |

It doesn't seem like ageism is much of a factor here.
But I think if you're working in the language school medium, you're definitely disadvantaged going up against Ken and Barbie who are in their early 20s. |

I disagree--ageism is a problem in Taiwan. On the other hand, it depends where you work. You will respected as a friendly uncle, but you will also be automatically disqualified from a number of opportunities. Interested to know how you got along if you did go to Taiwan. |
