Dear Sheik,

"I refer to your comment that other countries besides the UK probably have the rule that teachers returning from overseas must prove with a police report that they've been behaving themselves. Not in the U.S."

When I returned to the USA, I had to undergo FIVE separate and distinct police checks (including fingerprints each time) for various teaching jobs. Oh, and each time, my references back in Saudi Arabia were contacted.
Admittedly, this did not include Santa Fe Community College (where I now work part-time.)
Apparently the reasoning is that students at that age level can deal with having, say, a serial killer as a teacher.
Regards,
John

Well................you could try going to see the police and explain,"I am working here illegally, I wonder if................................"

And wait for the cell door to bang behind you.

That was meant to be a facetious, tongue-in-cheek comment/question and not to be taken seriously.

I said RETURNING FROM OVERSEAS. There is no foreign police check required in US school districts, apparently... Also, your background checks were probably limited to the relevant LOCAL jurisdictions. I think Scot47 was referring to national background checks in his and other countries.

Dear JS,
Now that you have, consistently and uncontestedly, been invested with the onerous position and duties of being the Sage of Santa Fe, my congratulations and good wishes. Merry Christmas, though belatedly.
Regards.
WMTN.

Dear WMTN,

Hmm, would that make me a "Writer of the Purple Sage" (my apologies to Zane Grey?)

Regards,
John

From someone who has just succeeded in this here it is :-

"1) Contact your embassy and ask them to send you a letter requesting
the police to give you a Criminal Record check. This letter must have
an Embassy stamp on it. It will probably have to state why you want
the check. Your Embassy will probably know what you want anyway.

2) Get the letter stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SR25)

3) Present the letter to your local police station along with a
passport photograph and your iqama (If the letter does not have 2
stamps on it the police will not touch it). You may also need a letter
from your employer (I didn't). The police will then fill out a few
forms and take your fingerprints.

4) Wait a few weeks and your Criminal Record / Police Clearance
document should be ready to collect (Mine took 4 days)"

Well Uncle Scott, you mean the police will not accept it, because they might touch your letter but not accept it because of the missing 2nd stamp! Laughing
Now, which stamp is most important for the letter, the embassy one or the ministry of foreign affairs?

BTW, Uncle Scott, why did you apply for the CR letter? Are you not going to retire, and consequently no need for this letter, unless Alex Salmond requires you to provide it before you can rent your flat in Scotland for security reason?

The "someone" who applied was not scot47. And cats should mind their own business. Now SCRAM before I bite you where it hurts.

I'd rather become a criminal than go through all that.

Then you won't be teaching or working with young people in the UK. Not even as a volunteer Sunday School Teacher !
