Nizwa's finest.... turkey, and it's a Butterball. With walnut apple dressing (lots of garlic and lemon juice), green bean casserole, smashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, roasted Kumara and a pecan pie. 9 days off for Eid, friends coming over to share the feast.......Life is really rough here in this "horrible" place:-) |

Same same in "Lalah", 10 day break looking good.
We are coming to Nizwa in the holiday , any you going to be there to say hello to??
Being British we don't do "Thanksgiving" but, what the heck, if we are in the right place at the right time????

I knew I was going to feel bad about this afterwards but it couldn't have been helped ....really
The guest list was pre-determined by my 'room mate'. And that meant guys-only.
Next year there will be some changes to this, believe me Promise |

How can you feel bad about guys only?
We have a houseful right now of guests from Salala and Saudi Arabia- but there is a second round of turkey dinner at our house tomorrow, if you are around. We're doin it on the barbi with our Aussi friend from Saudia, and a couple of others from our little group.
Come on over and see the new digs. Were even thinking of adding another camel to the stable! |

Sorry folks, we got up late and just couldn't make up the time, so had to swing off the Nizwa road and run straight up to Muscat.
Maybe another time.

At least Nizwa is only 90 - 120 minutes from Muscat. It's a very quiet place with very conservative people. There is very little to do but if you're into trekking there are some good mountain routes. A lot of people spend the weekend elsewhere. The students are less sophisticated and more tribal than Muscatis. It's not so great if you're not married as you can get lonely. We used to have a regular weekend visitor on our couch in Muscat; he came for the 'high life'. He finally quit and accepted a job in Sohar which has more of a social scene. |

Friendship and a car. That is what seems to be necessary here.
Without a car, you will wear out those valuable friendships.
There are beautiful places quite close in to Nizwa to go visit, besides Muscat. I stayed home, more or less, this holiday, and I saw a lot of the region, had a 4 day pajama party with visiting friends, and enjoyed myself immensely.
When and if boredom strikes- there is always a quick cheap flight to India! |

You're right. Without a car, you're a dead duck and stuck stuck stuck.
Friends are essential too but you need to avoid the types who are into the booze. They are depressing, make you depressed and can't be relied on. |

How much more expensive is housing in Muscat than in Nizwa? I'm thinking of 2 to 3 bedrooms. (In Nizwa it's paid, but if I choose a place in Muscat higher than the allowance, I have to pay the difference.) Thanks! |

Baz,
If you are already in Oman, try to get a copy of H! from one of the p[etrol stations on Fridays.
There's usually a column at the back that gives a very rough idea of property prices. Obviously it depends on what you want; what state you want it in, and where it is, but at the moment three bedroom flats in Wadi Khabir and Ghallah seem to be about 400 rials; while a "delux flat" in Al Khuwair will set you back 700. |

Yes, you really need a car. Otherwise you will find yourself getting rides a lot from people who get tired of giving rides to those who are not only too cheap to get a car, but also to cheap to chip in a responsible amount for both gas and to help you with your rental costs or payments on a car. They are the classical "free riders".
Ditto those who do like to drink some, but don't want to pay for a liquor license. (I know of one person here who comes to parties and guzzles other's alcohol, but does not bring any or have a license).
You will figure out who these people are, and, hopefully, you will realize it is a club you don't want to belong to. |
