Is it okay to take them to Japan Post. This is where I have a bank account. Or do I need to take them to a regular bank? Any direction would be greatly appreciated I've been putting them away for over a year and I would like to cash them in.

You can take them to JP but only during banking hours. And they might make you actually deposit them into your account, then allow you to immediately withdraw it again in whatever denomination you want - that's what they did to me.

Just walk into a bank and they'll dump them into this big counting machine, similar to what casinos have to count slot wins. A number (the total) will pop up on the digital read out. You will be paid this amount in paper currency.

I had about two years worth of loose change that I took to the bank. They dumped them into the counting machine, but somehow some non-Japanese coins had gotten in there and buggered up the machine. Several staff were instructed to count all the coins by hand.

I felt guilty but it made me fall in love with the country just that little bit more Smile
