In answer to Cleo's question the person was African-American. African-Americans always wear African clothing.

What? What part of the US are you referring to? I lived and worked in the Washington DC area for years where the majority of the population is African-American and they wore generally the same things as this European-American did. In the two areas of the US where I live now... I don't recall seeing any African-Americans wearing "African clothing" - at least not in the offices and shopping centers where I go.

Well, Teta VS, I have seen Uncle Barack Hussein Obama, the African-American president of the USA, wearing a traditional Somali dress when he visited Kenya in 2006. If you don't believe me, check the link below! Laughing

I have heard that some African-Americans men wear the Grand Bubu robe, and women wear Kaftans during the Black History Month.

I think we are missing the point. The point is whether or not the person was terminated for wearing African clothing, the point is that they do not know how to treat teachers.

As far as African-Americans wearing African clothing I have grown up around a lot of African-Americans who have traveled to and from Africa. Many of them identify themselves both with both Africa and America and they show that in how they dress. I do not understand why is it when black people want to show how proud of they are of their heritage, people seem to have a problem with that. It really disturbs me that I am on a forum of international teachers and some of the ignorance that I see coming out of people's mouth is amazing. Especially the comments about associating jeans with traditional dress. There are many patterns and forms to African dress. You are speaking to someone who has traveled back and forth to the African continent for several years. Dont be as dumb as President Bush people AFRICA IS A CONTINENT NOT A COUNTRY!!!!
And as far as the woman who wore African dress to work, I do not see any problem with that. Saudis and most Arabs have stereotypes about black people, but if someone wanted to show them that they are proud of their roots, what is wrong with that? If all African-Americans just played into someone elses definition of them, then we would not have the first African-American president. HELLO!!!! People are satisfied when African-Americans depict themselves as hooligans, street-brawlers and gang bangers. But when someone wants to show how proud they are of themselves and their roots, then that becomes a problem.

For some of you who are supposed to be world travelers and global teachers, excuse me to say but you still have a lot of learning to do about culture and pride!!!! Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

This was your comment... please read it carefully... note the word "always." It thus made your comment patently wrong and your last little rant rather ridiculous - totally over the top - and completely uncalled for... and I must say tainted with racism - or reverse racism as the latest buzz phrase here in the US.

And then you proceed to lecture us on geography and Bush's ignorance... all completely irrelevant to the topic of this thread.

Get real woman... I'm beginning to suspect that in these threads you are describing yourself and you are the woman who was fired.
