What's considered to be standard teaching gear in Turkey? I've only ever taught at Austrian high schools, where T-shirts and jeans seem to be the norm. I'm assuming things are a bit more formal in Turkey. What's the standard code of dress for men and women at language schools? And do private high schools or universities require suits or uniforms of some sort?
I have a few suits that I can take with me, but my boyfriend doesn't have any. Should he buy a suit or would a few pairs of khakis and button-downs suffice for most places?
Thanks! |

Dress slacks, khakis and pressed white shirts with a tie work almost everywhere. Once you arrive you can then adjust to the local norm. |

A smart-casual look is acceptable in most places.
However, avoid the jeans/T-shirt 'beach-bum' look - not good self-advertisement in class... As far as I know, the Education Ministry in Ankara have strict regulations concerning state school teacher attire - shirt and tie for men and women forbidden from wearing trousers are some examples. |

The school doesn't care and mostly wants their native teachers to look what they think people from that country look like. Sometimes I do wear jeans and a nice t-shirt, but sometimes I also wear jeans and a sweater, or slacks and a tucked-in button-down shirt, but I never wear a tie, oh no no. |

I am a woman, but I was looking for advice on both sexes since my boyfriend will be coming too. Glad to know that it doesn't seem to be super-formal -- my boyfriend was just worried about having to wear a suit all the time, but he can handle slacks and pressed shirts.

Do all female teachers really have to wear skirts? Yikes. Is that only in high schools, or does it count for language schools as well? |

The rule on skirts was for elem. and high schools and was changed like... 10 years ago.
That being said, dress style changes from place to place and even dept. to dept. At my university prep class teachers can wear nice jeans and a blouse, but in my dept it has to be nice trousers or skirts. the dean wears a black leather skirt and stilleto ensemble that .... well i hope i look as good as her in my mid 50's! |

It really varies. I tend to dress smart casual at my uni. I often wear a jacket, but rarely a tie. However, some of the teachers teach in a t-shirt and torn jeans. We're pretty relaxed about that.
Language schools tend to be relaxed as well, unless they're catering to the business crowd. Jeans and t-shirt are probably going to be ok, though you should dress up at first to make a good impression. |
