Why do so many people refer to 'Bahasa' as a short cut for Malay or Indonesian?
We don't say 'do you speak the English language?" We just say 'English', or 'Japanese' or whatever.
anyone know of a reason?  |

Shouldn't that be Bahasa Inggris? 
A nasty habit I try to get away from mixing languages in a sentence. I have taught in Mexico, Cambodia and now Indonesia and find myself falling into it always.
Sometimes Indonesians will just say bahasa to me and I understand...do you speak the language? Unfortunately that could mean Indonesian, Sundanese, Javanese or... |

One of the early lessons I learned in Indonesia was to quit asking 'why'. Invariably, one gets a reply in the form of a rather vacant expression.
That was when I asked someone why we say 'pulang-pergi' (back and there/go) rather than 'pergi-pulang' (go there and back). After all, you can't return unless you've already gone somewhere !!
Another is when on the phone, 'here' is where the recipient of the call is and 'there' is where you; the caller, is calling from.
Agreed, it's weird but it's their language and I guess we just have to get to grips with it.
