Hi all,

I was just curious if there were any career teachers that may know the answer to my question. Although I don't expect to get rich if I were to become an English teacher, I haven't had much luck finding what the end potential can be.

I've seen the starting salaries for Japan/Korea, but I'm curious to know what kind of salary I could expect to be making if I were to make this a long term career and also get a graduate degree in TESOL or Linguistics.

Sky's the limit-

Japan and Korea generally are considered amongst the highest entry level salaries. Remember, though: It's not just salary at all, it's salary versus expenses. JApanese salaries haven't moved much in years, from what I hear, and while they may be dollar for dollar high compared to a lot of places, I've heard that doesnt' usually translate to savings as readily as in Korea.

As you get higher quals, though, the world does open up. I've got friends earning pretty high salaries in teh most unlikely places- Burma, Thailand...all over, really.

In most markets, entry level is the bottom of the pay scale. As you climb the pay scale, it gets easier to make decent money a lot of places.

What's decent, though? With a good package (flights, housing, healthcare) a person earning $30K a year in Korea can probably save half of that. (Or kill the student loans in a hurry.)

A person earning $30K a year in New York city is probably not nearly so happy. economically at least.

I'm currently in Ecuador, though I've also been doing some freelance teacher training worldwide in recent years. I probably earn in the range of $20K (USD). Sounds pretty crappy in a lot of places, but I have to say that I live better, and save as much, compared to friends in the US earning $40K to $60K.

So it all depends...

best,

Justin
