|

Hi,
I have been teaching ESL in Prague for about 2 years and I'm interested in teaching in Japan? Any advice about what city to go to (not too expensive since the standard of living is high) and what type of school (ALT or JET - no clue to the types of program) to apply for? Should I apply via a recruiter or thru the school. Have a Master degree but not in education. Also, when should I show up? Please advise.
Thanks for your help. |

Is this a question?

Depends on how you choose to live.

Might help to know your background and teaching goals before we can give advice. Otherwise, go here and read the 3 top links.

Don't go through a recruiter. No need.

Peak hiring time for most jobs is Feb/March because the academic year begins in April. If you are planning to show up to do the job hunting, heed this advice:
1. come with plenty of money in your pocket (US$4000-5000)
2. plan to stay at a gaijin house / guesthouse until you get hired. You will problems renting an apartment without an employer to serve as guarantor anyway.
3. look at the ads before you come to see what is available, and contact the employers before you come so they know when to expect you and plan an interview. Some employers might offer phone/Skype interviews. Almost nobody pays for your airfare.
4. don't contact companies that aren't advertising.
5. expect a lot of competition even for entry level jobs (which is all you are qualified for as far as we can see; more background on you might say more) |
