Hi Milkcan.

I have been reading your posting. Out of curiosity, did you successfully get hired in Vietnam? Please update us of your situation.

Thanks

I am currently teaching english with math contents in S. Korea to high school Korean teachers. While I am here, I have noticed that the caucasion teachers that they have hired here are very, very under qualified but they do get pay much more. I even saw many caucasians from south Africa that have very thick african accents or some other accents that were very difficult for someone from north America to understand. Some even have gramar skills of a third grader. Yet they are hired over very well qualified Asian-AMERICAN. I think that it is time for our asians counterparts to understand that Asian are also "native" Americans. Is it because of the demands from the students or is it the ethic of the human resourse department? I am teaching the teachers that had lived many years in the states and I am doing great. So it is our responsibility to stop this from happenning. Anyone have any good ideas?

Thomas,

Good for you to share your view. Since you are there on ground zero, show them. Get an Asian American and your so called 3rd grade "Whites" to present something. See who can articulate the subject and after that ask the locals, Who did a better job and is skin color important because of "face" issue -- I was taught by a White person or u will actually learn something from a QUALIFIED person for the $$ that were spent. They might not admit it BUT they know.

Baby steps....some one needs to start the process....

Logica,
Thank you for your view. I don't mean to be a racist because I was adopted by a caucasian family. Today I got a standing ovation after my 3 hours long class was over. If there are more asians who do great job, then we will be known. so I urge all of you to give 110 percent when you are out there. Do show that asians are a hard working force with high working ethic. and I don't know why my message is put on the last page instead of the first page??? Smile. However, I do thanks Dave for giving all of us a place to voice our opinions.Good luck to all of you with your journey of life.

It is not neccesarily what the schools want but what their customers want. Here in Vietnam when a center says they use native speakers the Vietnamese think that means "white" caucasians. Is it fair? Absolutely not. You need to talk to the owners of these schools (most of whom are Vietnamese) and tell them. However do not feel too bad they also discriminate on age and looks as well. Really no different then what goes on in America except here it is perfectly legal (just read the local papers classifieds where you will see them list accepted ages, genders etc.)
