Check www.altcertflorida.org and they have all the details about alternative certification in Florida for K-12. |
Just don't expect them to actually respond to requests for information.

I did the same thing in Virginia and it was quick and resulted in my getting an ESL high school position immediately following. Broward and Palm Beach counties would both be fun places to live and would still give you the "South Florida" experience minus many of the negatives that have been mentioned here. A lot of people who have never lived in Florida have a romanticized view of what Miami would be like to live in. Some of the places like Coconut Creek, Pompano Beach and so forth in the north end of Broward next to Boca Raton are beautiful and not that expensive. For what it's worth condo prices have come way down as have rents (to a lesser extent) recently. Starting salaries for new public school teachers in South Florida are not too bad, close to $40,000 and that's for ten months of work! |
I would think that Miami is likely to have many of the same kinds of problems other big cities have - crime, government bureaucracy and so on. And then there are the hurricanes. |

I just came from there. The job market and pay is horrible. Plus it's very expensive to live there. I had high hopes, but was gravely disappointed.
Like the other posters suggested, I checked all the websites and applied to various schools like crazy. There's very little available right now. I would have been better off going abroad + would have gotten paid more. |
How low is low pay? |

jeffdog hit the nail on the head in his post. I lived in Broward County (just north of Dade) until very recently. Dade county is okay, and the schools there run the gamut. Miami is actually a great place to work, but the job scene is competitive and you have to do your homework about the school, even in this depressed market. I wouldn't avoid Miami, but the city definitely isn't all pastels and mimosas by the pool. It's a gritty, working class city in many places. That's not a put-down, either.
South Beach is skanky, IMO. I prefer North Miami Beach. The beaches there are cleaner and less crowded, and you can park two or three blocks away and walk to the shore, plus rents are cheaper.
Hurricanes are an occasional irritant, but what place is free of weather issues? Salaries for teachers are okay, depending on where you teach.

This site is great! They have all the charter school jobs that don't show up on public school district websites, and they have a whole bunch of public school jobs too.
In Florida, jobs are advertised by county. The biggest counties are Dade (Miami), Broward (Ft. Lauderdale), Palm Beach (Boca, West Palm Beach), Hillsborough (Tampa), Pinellas (St. Petersburg), Orange (Orlando), and then there is Jacksonville, which is actually part of Georgia, hahaha.
One last thing: learn to salsa. Great way to make friends and have fun, trust me on this one. |
