Only if you register you have a boyfriend with the police Rolling Eyes

Many people have regular relationships, just don't be blatent with PDAs or offending neighbours who might report you.

Having spent some time in actual "shari'a-land," I would agree that the UAE is better, but not nearly as civilized, particularly if you're a woman, as Dubai pretends to be. You've got to think both defensively and proactively. For example, as a married Western woman, I won't go to a bar without my husband. Why? It makes you a target. The thinking would be: Any married woman who goes out uncovered and without her husband, at night, to a hotel and enters its bar alone is a *beep* who would gladly have sex with a stranger(s).

You can have a boyfriend, just don't plan on having sex before you're married or being in a position wherein someone you've pissed off could say you had sex before you were married.

People break these rules all the time... but you *do* need to be discreet. Particularly take care not to blab about what you did over the weekend in the workplace in the hearing of people who could take offence or who might have it in for you (and who knows who they are?).

I know of people fired supposedly because of gay relationships but none fired specifically because of breaking the premarital rule.

Muslim women do not take their husband's family name on marriage; so hotel reception staff are unlikely to quiz couples whose names are different.

Bars? Homeless vet, you seem to be in AL Ain, why not try Ladies Night at the H&J ...

What's the H&J? I probably spend more time out in Abu or Dubai than Al Ain, but that's about to change since I've deigned to adjunct starting next week. I figured I should have some interaction with Emeratis besides playing dodge with them on the roadways.
One exception to my no drinking without the ball and chain in tow would be the Rugby Club.

H&J = Horse and Jockey at the Intercon. Don't go often myself but plenty of UAEU/HCT people do go in term time.

Now, ain't it funny that a Rugby Club, which in the UK would be likely to be a bastion of macho nonsense and testosterone, is the most unaccompanied-female-friendly place in AL Ain

One of those oddities that one encounters in the expat life - especially in the Middle East. Cool

Come come, they never bother westerners in terms of dating...it's not Saudi Arabia--as long as they avoid too much PDA...

I have been routinely asked for copy of my marriage certificate when my husband and I check into hotels throughout the Gulf region.

You have no sympathy for a woman who has been raped? A little harsh I feel.

During five years in Dubai we were never asked for any marriage proof.

I was surprised by this. I have a different surname to my spouse and in 11 years we have never been asked for any proof of marriage.

I have to agree with you, Veralynn. Feeling no sympathy for the victim of such a horrendous crime is sca-ry...
