Hi,

I am 35 from the US with an art related BA, and am planning to embark on an English teaching career. I would like to break into SE Asia, mostly because I love the enlightenment/Buddhism feel and the food. I want to be there by the spring equinox. I also do my own writing and research, and would like to pursue an MA eventually in ESLso I don't want a ton of hours. I will be coming there with 13.5k savings.

My plan is to go there in late March and sight see to August, and at some point get a CELTA in there, then start a job at a Chinese university in September. I wouldn't mind teaching for a little while in Laos or Cambodia on a short term contract either.

Anyone have suggestions where I might burn about four months while working short term and staying kinda even? 13.5-2 for the CELTA leaves me with 11.5 to chill with for four months. However, I'd like to keep this fairly level to save for grad school.

As far as decent pay with low hours, is the China university job the best? Are there any decent gigs like this in Viet Nam for instance? Thanks.

I know I could do Korea, just not sure I want to.

You should probably ask these in the Vietnam section and the China section or any other SE Asian country you have an interest in so that the people there can give you an accurate answer to your question.

Not sure if you can get a University job so easily, though. Seems you'd need a high level of the native language of said country to teach there, even if it is for an English class.

CHinese unis are often pretty easy to get into. Low pay, but low work hours as well. Free housing.

So you are looking for temp work, then. Good luck! Visas are issued because a person has a contract for longer. Ask about the situation in your interested countries by visiting their respective forums.

Well I figured out today that I'll likely do my CELTA in Viet Nam in probably April, and I also see VN hires a lot of people during summer break, so I should find work anyway. I might try to make a go of it there to see if I can handle it. Living in too polluted an environment really turns me off though. If I work in Hanoi, maybe I could look for work in Yunnan eventually, which has a great variety of edible mushrooms. Sounds tasty hehe.
