Hi everyone,
I was wondering what the job market is for certified teachers with no classroom experience? I will soon graduate with a M.S. in Mathematics Education and be certified to teach grades 7-12. I have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics (with no education minor). The only experience I have is student teaching and a few years as a substitute. Would I be able to find a position in an international school or do I need to work here in the U.S. for a few years before I could find a good position? Thanks for your assistance.

YOu often need at least 2 years to work in an intl school. That being said, some schools in "unpopular" countries would probably hire you. Think places like the -stans, parts of Africa, etc. |

Which parts of Africa? And do you believe I could make a salary to support myself and start to pay my student loans (or would I be really struggling?)? Thanks for the information naturegirl. |

Probably most of Africa that isn't touristy, like Morroco and Kenya. |

Thanks for the information naturegirl.
Glenski - I'm really not interested in joining the Peace Corps, albeit a great organization, I was interested in finding a position in a school directly. However, given my limited experience I might have to wait a bit. |

Student teaching and substitute work are still teaching. This experience might qualify, depending on the school. |

In a foreign country where English is not the native tongue? Your only shot is international schools or military bases.
Are you looking to teach math or English, by the way? If it's English, then as far as Japan is concerned, you will not get a direct hire position right off the bat in a mainstream (public or private) school. You will have to take conversation school or ALT work for a year or two first, then get in the long line for direct hire jobs. |
