MOD EDIT I just want out of this damn place now. I don't have enough moey to afford a ticket to China. I might just pay for a ticket with a credit card, but I am wondering if anyone knows of websites/companies where I can apply online that will possibly hire me while I am still living here and help me get over there if they are interested in hiring me?

Most companys will reimburse the price of your flight if you sign a 12 month contract and half that for a 6 month contract, but only once you complete your contract.

I have had and will have a contract that won't pay unless you show them the ticket back you must purchase. My first job in China they wanted to pay my way to Korea. I said that I am not Korean. The contract said to my home country.
I recomend you try Korea,Taiwan,Japan or any other country. Many places pay and many don't.
Don't get into dept for a job. That is worse than slavery.

Wanting out of Cal and wanting INTO China? Role reversal at its finest!
Seriously, just give it some real thought first.

I know it sounds crazy, but I just seem to get along better with Chinese people than my fellow Americans. A lot of people here are just too rude. That is another thing I'm tired of. I joined this online community called italki and everyday Chinese people request that I add them as friends. They always send me very warm and friendly messages. I really would also like to move to China for my general fondness to the friendliness of the people.

people who are low on cash really should rethink coming to china. there are stories on this forum of people who did so, found themselves in a terrible work situation, and didn't have the money to get themselves out of it.

i think once you've been in china for awhile (if you make it here), the rose-coloured glasses will be coming off.

Ripped off, stomped on and shattered into pieces, though there will be a couple of people to help you pick up the remnants.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what about credit cards?

As others have said, you will probably only get airfare reimbursement after you have completed 6, and then 12 months of your contract. Though it isn't impossible to get it up front. I had a round-trip flight paid for me up front. I got the job through the ESL school of a city college, who had a liason program with a school in China. Job sucked, but the flight was free Smile

Precisely. People are people! Everywhere! That was the biggest mistake I made when I first got to China, I was going to find out "what these people are like". Human nature knows no cultural differences.

Plenty of schools that give air compensation, mostly at the end of your contract. Stick with private schools such as Astons, Webs, Efs, and the like. Most will hire you overseas but you must pay for your ticket. You'll hear horror stories about all of these schools but they are just about individual schools. I have friends either working at the schools or have worked there, some happy some not. Coming to China flat broke isn't a good idea, but some schools will give advance on pay if you approach the manager privately and beg. But, take now and later you may be short.

Hmmmm. Not sure how long you'll keep this attitude.

BTW - I've lived in China for 5 years.

It's not ideal.. but assuming the employment will come through, it might be worth the gamble (especially if there are no jobs back home).

youre right, and i wouldnt recommend anyone coming here with no cash and only a credit card. but if they're desperate to leave home and have nothing else, then a visa card's better than nothing.
