This is very off-topic with regard to actual teaching (most posts are on this board I've noticed!), but bear with me.
I have a nine-year old brother here in Scotland that I play Xbox with all the time. many are snooty about computer games but a positive aspect of them is that they enable people of different ages to play together on an equal footing.
Are xboxs common in VN; among expat teachers if not locals? Its not that I actually want to spend much of my time sitting playing it, but if I can get xbox live hooked up it would be a fantastic way to keep in touch with my little brother. You can chat whilst playing; and once you've paid the intitial $50 its free. I would then use it to chat to all my family.
Anyone know anything about this? |

I think that the lists without "specific" job-related forums, (unlike Korea, China), are more general in scope...
As for xbox live, I don't think you'd have any problems where you get a decent internet connection. So, your pings/lag might be a bit high, though :S |

Ping time is the time it takes for the data to transmit from one point to another. The higher the number the longer it takes. So a big ping time means a larger amount of lag time. Example: You are playing a interactive xbox game on xbox live. You shoot but the person you are shooting at would not be shot for a longer time if your internet connection has bad ping time. Some ISP are better then others. Here in Saigon SPT is probably the worst (my ping is 300ms). VNPT is not too bad. FPT varies |

But to be honest the lag/ping doesn't really bother me anyway. If I can get to the point where that's my main problem, I'll be delighted!
What I wanted to know was, are Xboxs and xbox live common in VN right now? Do you get, for example, Western teachers with xboxs (hooked up to xbox live)...or Vietnamese people with them?
When I was ther in the summer, briefly, I saw a few gaming cafes with Playstation 3s. Don't know if that's a good or bad sign (I'm not actually that bothered btw). I know that they will be very expensive as well. I'd probably have to get it "chipped" to play pirate games, which opens up new problems regarding xbox live (some have been blocked in the West).
So if anyone knows anyone with xbox live, let me know. If I get zero responses I will pretty much give up on the idea and resign myself to skyppe (which you cant shoot people over, unfortunately) |
