it's a miracle, but the consulate finally got back to me!

contrary to what some may think, getting married in the states is going to be a total piece of cake.

a family member of mine called the appropriate offices this week and as it turns out, all my fiance needs to marry me (in New Jersey) is a translated copy of her passport. with that copy, it needs to be signed and stamped by a notary in America and you're done. ID that I will require: valid driver's license.

regarding the consulate, they wrote to me yesterday telling me that my fiance can travel using her tourist visa to the states and legally marry me, no K1 fiance visa or anything else is required.

I'd say it's getting near that number here as well.Everyone I talk to seems to be divorced or know of someone who is divorced. It's the new trend now! Smile

Currently Poland's at about a 25% divorce rate for new marriages, not bad, could be kept low by those unwilling to divorce in front of the Catholic church.

Anyhow I'm sure dynow knows what he's getting himself into, perhaps you guys didn't test the waters thoroughly enough before jumping in? I'm also sure there are some warning signs that your partner is going to be a bat-shit crazy spouse if you're paying enough attention.

I think we're forgetting women are insanely difficult to understand no matter where they're from!

along with the grueling amount of paperwork involved, lawyer fees, etc. Going in and out of marriage is simply an easier process in America. let us not forget the numerous wedding chapels in Las Vegas Very Happy (On avg., there are 114,975 marriages per year are in LV!)

also, the judge really needs to be convinced that the marriage will not and cannot work in order to be granted a divorce in Poland.

All the best. Mrs Bilko (Polish) and I have just celebrated our 12th anniversary and we're still as happy as ever so it's not impossible.

I think a better question would be...what percentage of marriages in Poland are happy or reasonably so?

Not many, I'd say. At least not many that I've met. In fact, maybe I can count them on one, maybe two hands. I've been here for 15 years. They don't always get divorced, though. Sometimes, they just live in the same house, but two completely separate lives.

Weird. I'm sure it's the "Catholic" thing/peer pressure/fear of hell that keeps some of them from getting divorced, as well as the high cost of housing (that last one is probably the number one reason). I'm female myself, and maybe I'm a bit prejudiced. But I have noticed that Polish women are very used to "calling the shots" in a marriage and if grandma is around, she will most likely try to run your lives.

So, moving away sounds like a great deal. Since many of you guys are convinced that Polish "birds" are "hot", then probably the best thing to do is get yours and run away.

But many Polish men are wimps and are lazy, and alcoholics to boot. So, the women are often forced into leadership roles in order to keep the families together and the children fed.

So, it probably works both ways.

But I'd say that Polish women in general are "hard to get along with"/very strong-willed and do want to control the marriages. How's that for stereotyping??? Wink

There are wonderful exceptions, though. I'm sure there are. I've got a few students this year who seem to have wives who are nice. :0 (I've not the met the wives yet, though.).

aaahhhh, it's always nice to hear a woman's point of view, especially one that knows what she's talking about.

That's really the problem with stereotyping. Smile

Just like "all Americans are loud, obnoxious and fat."

Or Brits (esp. young men) are all "drunks".

Anyway, I think it is mostly the "babcias that are the problem. They don't let the young people live their lives. (At least it isn't the norm.) They really do like the control the family.

I don't live in the heart of Warsaw, so, Warsaw being the enlightened place it is--maybe completely different.
