Hi, I realize I am unlikely to find uni employment in Yunnan due to me being new, but I was hoping to hear any views or recommendations on non-polluted cities close thereto where uni work is available (where I could travel to Yunnan on long weekends, etc.) Thanks. |

Your question is a bit like writing - does anyone know where I can get a job near France!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yunnan is large - the tourist friendly spots are tiny compared to bulk of the province - and many exciting areas are remote and difficult to access for long weekend visits - even if you were based in Kunming!!!!!!
Normal Yunnan - seen from the road is like much of China - large roadside populations, where people are constantly building new houses and other roadside constructions - larger towns that have practically lost all there unique Yunnan character, and have become yet another concrete mass - lots of farming areas, which are gradually on the change to more mechanised and intensive farming method - hills and mountains that have long since lost any natural forest - lots of dirty, polluting small scale rural industry (smoke belching brick and tile kilns are a common Yunnan site) - quarries everywhere that transport stone to cement factories - and on the road, truck after tractor after truck!!!!!
Of course in between there are some gems of places - but getting to the remote stuff in Yunnan - away from the madness of new China - as in every province - takes a bit of doing. |

try nanning. lots to see (waterfalls, rice terraces, seaside etc) within a half days bus/train ride of that city (kunming's 12-14 hours by train though). if you want further details, dont be afraid to ask.
two places of employment come to mind in nanning - guangxi international business vocational college and guangxi university. worked at one of the two above places myself in 2004. |
