I had never heard of HIPF until I saw their ad in today's ARAB NEWS. Any comments anyone ?

Looks like yet another attempt to induct Saudis into the "work force."

"Saudi Arabia is setting up 160 vocational training centres to help meet its target of creating 3.6 million jobs within 10 years and becoming less reliant on its oil revenues.
To hit the target, the economy must double the number of jobs created each year, with roles coming from a number of sectors.

Manufacturing is expected to play a major role in this job creation. 'Manufacturing is the next evolutionary step in our development,' Dr Khaled Al-Ohali, Vice President of the National Industrial Cluster Development Program, told the Saudi Investment Forum.

He identified five key areas for manufacturing growth, including metals processing and the automotive value chain, such as making car seats and tyres.

The kingdom will create 160 vocational training centres by 2017, which will support industry. It has already set up the Higher Institute for Plastics Fabrication and is working on the Rubber Technology Institute."

But it doesn't seem to offer employment opportunities for many non-specialized EFLers:

The position would be responsible for teaching Plastic technology courses to the Saudi Arabian students as per existing curriculum.

Processing technology of plastics such as Injection Molding, Blow Molding, Blown Film Extrusion, Pipe Extrusion, Sheet Extrusion and Thermo Forming.
Basic polymer science.
Maintenance technology of processing machines for plastics
The candidate shall have Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate for general range of science and at least 3 years of practical experience, as an instructor in a school and/or a minimum of 5 years in a plastic factory workshop. He should possess a valid Indian passport.

P.S. Unfortunate choice of "Fabrication" in the institute's name, wouldn't you say?

The ad in today's "Green Snooze" is specifically for EFL instructors. I can imagine that the Saudi student intake will be at a fairly low level of English - as are most products of the Saudi school system.

When do you think they'll ever learn it will be a lot cheaper to teach the instructors Arabic than the students English.

It is quite remarkable how widespread is the assumption that everyone needs English before they can proceed with any kind of training.

What percentage of any population is capable of reaching competence in a foreign language ? Especially the level of competence needed to deal with Plastics Technology !

Dear scot47,

A deluge in Saudi - will wonders never cease. Funny thing, though, about the horizon - the more you approach it, the more it recedes.
No need to learn Spanish - I've been teaching ESL here for about seven years, so virtually everyone in the state is now bilingual (well, except for me, that is.)
You could learn Navajo, but just brushing up on your "Murken" will suffice. Don't worry, though - I'll be around to interpret (inshallah.)

HIPF

Pros- paid on time, nice raise every year very quick in iqama renewal. tickets for self+ 3 dependents

cons- clock in system, classes are 90 minutes, management is very controlling, director of college walks into your classroom randomly, students are vocational students very obnoxious, location is in the industrial city of riyadh you need to leave home every day at least by 6:15 to get to work on time, only 30 days off the whole year ( it gets very draining), every month you have to stay until 6:15 teaching make up classes to students

if you take the job, just weigh the pros and cons
