hey yall, would any of you happen to know how much the lowest/most reasonable price of a one way ticket from chicago to tokyo is if i leave in early march? the cheapest i've found so far is around $500.

in general, should i purchase the ticket now or wait to purchase it at a later date? if i should wait, when would be the best time (i.e. one month, 2 or 3 weeks in advance, etc.) to buy it? i really only have a month and a week left.

thanks guys!

$500 sounds very reasonable to me- does that include taxes and other surcharges? Usually flights don't get a lot cheaper than they are 2-3 months in advance of the departure date- wait longer and you risk the flights filling up, especially with Japan.

yes it does include all taxes and fees. i figure i should buy it now before the prices go up. how much does a one way ticket to japan usually cost from the big cities like LA, NYC, Dallas, Atlanta, etc.?

from what i've found, seems like it is cheaper to fly from chicago to tokyo than any of the above. maybe because chicago is a major, most busiest hub in the US?

If you are under 26 or a quallified teacher under 35, you should try STA travel. I got a one way direct flight from Heathrow to Tokyo through them flying with Virgin for 330 including tax last March (plus 9 for the Young Person's travel card that you are supposed to have to qualify for some of the discount tickets). It was quite a saving considering booking the flight directly with Virgin would have a little over twice as much.

My ticket to Tokyo from New York is running me a little over $600. I bought from the airline directly because, to be honest, I have heard enough horror stories about buying tickets from companies like Expedia.

I feel I have more options buying from the airline and the price difference wasn't much. A little bit extra for a peace of mind.

Anyway, I bought my ticket in late November for my flight in March. I'm sure now it would be more expensive.

The rate is probably affected by what city you are flying out of, how many stop-overs you have, when you buy the ticket, and what day/time you are flying out.

My ticket is a direct flight with no stop-overs, so it may be more expensive for that reason too.

I made sure to get a direct flight because I almost missed my flight home from my interview when the plane I arrived at the airport got there 20 minutes late.

Thankfully the plane that I was supposed to get on had a malfunction during takeoff. They had to turn around, let everyone off, and then put everyone on a different plane...so I still made it home.
But being late to my arrival in Japan isn't something I want.

Just something to consider.

Now that is something you don't hear people say very often Shocked

For what it's worth, I travel often, and a lot of the time I buy tickets from Expedia or similar sites. I also sometimes book tickets for my boss's overseas travel through Expedia (the US site), and so far no problems at all. I was quite impressed with their customer service in fact when I had to change a flight because my boss changed his mind after I had made the booking.
