Sorry to anyone who replied to this post, I've altered it so the original letter I included in the first post isnt able to be found. It looks like I will have a chance at the job I wanted after all. All has been sorted.

Silly lady. How does she suppose you got an MA without getting a BA?
Would it be worth getting a letter from your uni and sending that to her? Or is she too obtuse to understand that (going from the emails, I would say probably). |

Bulgogiboy,
You have hit the downside of Scotlands having its own education system.
The four-year Scottish Masters is widely misunderstood, as is the Oxbridge habit of taking a first degree, swearing not to teach at an institution that does not exist, paying a lump sum and receiving an MA (Oxon) or MA (Cantab).
While we are at it., back in the late 1960s, neither London University nor the University of Warwick would accept Scottish 'H' Grades. They wanted 'A' Levels.
So BAE are not alone. |

The ignorance of some English clerk at Preston Aerodrome should not surprise any of us. How many people know that the first degree in Arts/Humanities from the 4 ancient universities in Scotland is an MA ?
Interestingly enough when I was first recruited for KSA in 1970, the Saudi Arabian Educational Attache in London was well aware of the situation.
Maybe the Saudis know things that are beyond the ken of our Southern neighbours ? |

Ha! I thought I was the only one. I applied every year for about five years and always got immediate boilerplate rejections. Finally, I crafted an obsequious inquiry, pointing out that the BA/MA in English/ESL and experience clearly listed on my CV far exceeded the requirements. Don't hold me to this, because I don't remember exactly, but she answered something like my MA was unacceptable because it did not have "ESL" on the face of the diploma. So I told her to just look at my transcripts and had my college write her to explain that my MA was indeed in ESL and whether that was on the face of the diploma was not important. At the time I think I was approaching the age of 55. She wrote back something like oh, ok, but now you are too old. I have this image of her sitting there with a magazine, a nail file, chewing gum.... |

Dear bulgogiboy,
Never mind the first or second degree, these people are giving you the third degree.
Regards,
John |

Well, why the Scottish education system does not replace the MA with BA as other British universities? Is it because the Scottish, like Uncle Scott , want to preserve the tradition of the papal bull (in which the bishop of Glasgow, obtained from Pope Nicholas V in 1451).
"If anyone shall presume to attempt this, let them know that he will incur the wrath of Almighty God, and of the blessed apostles Peter and Paul."

Uncle Scott, what do you think? Should the Scottish MA be abolished and replaced with the BA of her majesty the Queen? |

Why go in for TEFLology? You would be better taking up Window Cleaning. I hear that bartending can be a fulfilling career. Plumbing ? |

I got offered BAE based on my Scottish MA in English Lit and CELTA. I reckon the secretary was between cups of coffee at the time and reading more carefully than usual. 'Course when they said 'yup', it was no use. They told me I'd have to wait 2 or 3 months for a decision, so I took another job. 2 weeks after I started t'other, they offered. Too blimming late.
Whilst admittedly they are not the brightest, you must remember not to indicate that they're not the brightest. Never tell them they misunderstood, emphasise that it was your fault and you were unclear. That's what you have to do for the cash.
My advice would be - just send the degree scans and apply again, if you're not sick of it all. |

If that doesnt work I might apply later on down the line once I've got my Master's in TESOL and a bit of experience in the gulf(and maybe they've replaced their recruiting staff with less ignorant people...). |
Judging from our PM's she could be in the position for a while yet! |

Did she mention salary and benefits to you? If so, are they just as high as ever? Would you consider re-applying sometime in the future? |
The package came to around 45K sterling (3years ago). Think it's still the same or more. I took another job that paid 30K - but I could take my wife with me. BAE had a waiting list of about 18 months for married accommodation. I thought I would apply again if that were to change, but now my wife's got work too, and very happy about it, and we earn about the same in total. Maybe try BAE when we're more into middle age... |
