Hi oxys
I'm really just looking for some general information about the place like the cost of living, social life there and what the citys transportation system is like. I'm currently looking for my first teaching job and I'm thinking of trying to get employed there. Any information would be a great help in helping me decide.

you'd be better off joining a social networking site for guangzhou and asking there. almost every member on a site like that lives in the city and you can get many opinions and lots of info, whereas on this site you might get a few first hand opinions on the city with some outdated third hand info thrown in.

there's a current thread on the off topic forum discussing these various websites and how to find them. and there's at least one very good one for GZ.

Your first teaching job? Does that mean that you've never taught before? GZ is very strict about having a degree and at least two years teaching experience in order to obtain the FEC and FRP.

The cost of living is high and wages are average.
City transportation is okay (the subway is cheap and good), busses are driven by kamikazi pilots-in-training and taxis are okay (although they disappear at the most inconvenient times).
Summers are excruciatingly hot and humid, winters cool and damp.
Apartments can be 1500 RMB/mo for a hovel on up.
Night life is good - you can find a venue to suit almost any taste.

AS ECC says, join a social nerdworking site like Facebook or Twitter where you're sure to be able to interact with lots of people who live in GZ.

Cheers!

So true... I had previously worked in Jakarta and thought I knew a bit about hot and humid but nothing prepared me for GZ in August. Factor in the pollution and you'll want to stay indoors with the a/c on.
