OK, I am sure a few people will flame me here but anyway. I am curious as to what/how someone can make good money teaching in China. I am not talking about loading up with 8 hours of teaching kindy etc a day, that just isn't what I am looking for. I also understand that 99% of the jobs online aren't going to be the high paying ones. I am guessing that it is work related to IELTS/TOEIC/TOEFL and corporate/business tutoring of which depends largely on your ability to sell yourself and guanxi (along with qualifications)? Is there a market for privates who want basic/beginner classes with a private tutor who can communicate and explain things to them in Chinese? I am just trying to get an idea of what is realistically possible if someone went with the aim of making money and a long term outlook. I know teaching doesn't pay that great compared to other "careers", but for whatever reason it is what I am doing and probably will be doing for some time. I just want to make the most of it.

From the film, "The graduate".

Find a joint program that pays in foreign currency. Many unis that have programs here in China pay better than the Chinese.

yes, you got it. Those jobs that are high-paying and rewarding are almost never advertised. They fill them up fast.

The other high paying positions require real teaching experience and qualifications and a 40-hour week.

Many of those IB programs are filled with non-local hires via sister institutions or exchange programs.

Now, if you can teach non-English based subjects you can find better paying positions. I taught Physics for a short time at an international school. I also taught in an EMBA program that allowed managers to go abroad. That position was directly from Guanxi and was only a 1-year deal under that program. However, I had to be qualified with a MBA and a teaching degree too. My EE undergrad degree helped since the EMBA students were mostly involved in engineering or high tech.

I was lucky to get that opportunity, the most common positions you will find are around 6000 RMB a month for 16-20 hours a week. If you have a master's degree or higher add 500-1000 RMB additional to that.

If you can negotiate and have good experience with the above quals you can get 8000-10000 RMB a month, but your hours will be increased too. Don't go over 30-hours per week, you will hit burn out especially if most of those hours are Oral English based.

China is not a good place to get Rich from ESL teaching.

Thanks, Snoopbot. I know how bad it can be when you overload with oral classes and I found that 30 hours a week like you said is possible but anymore and I just snap. I know I won't get rich from teaching, but as before for whatever reason it is what I think I'll be doing for some time and was just looking for some advice from people who were/are in China and making more than just the 12 hour a week uni jobs or teaching kindy/child classes. I'm not looking to teach anything subject related outside of English, so thought that test prep, business English classes for companies and tutoring privates in Chinese was probably my best shot and I know that any chance at these would depend on my experience and guanxi along with qualifications. Thanks for the reply and info.

For a few months I over-extended myself by taking on a few extra duties and taking the load off another FT that had to return to the states for an emergency. I was pushing 30-hours a week of just Oral English lessons, I got so burned out I would drift off during the topics (especially when listening to poor rambling) . I would miss the serious pronunciation and grammar errors of the talking students. For the talking/listening part I basically ended up losing my voice too.

So I put the magical number at 30-hours for me when I hit burn-out.
Some can go higher or lower than this number but that seems to be the average.

At that time I think the corner store owner loved me because I was his best customer buying Red Bulls and Chocolate bars.
