Read together with pictures of Nizwa from the internet, it seems safe to apply to.

You mention a pretty view from your house. Does it mean you can afford to rent a house of your own there? Or maybe even that the college offers villas as accomodation for their faculty? Your answer would be truly appreciated, as I am very housing-sensitive type.

The university will arrange your housing, but that can take a lot of time. My friend and I found our house ourselves, and paid for it with our housing allowances.

Most people are happy with their housing here. There is housing in Berkat al Moos, where the university, or in our village, which is about 15 K. away, or in Firq or Nizwa, 20-26 K. away from school.

Some of our friends don't like our housing because we are way out near the mountains and away from the town. We love it for those very reasons. This morning we had left the gate open to go to work, and were visited by a large herd of goats.

There are possibilites in all of the above places, but you have to be patient and insist on getting what you want.

Hey Des... you didn't mention if the housing is apartment buildings or a villa. Most of the people that I have communicated with there are/were living in flats. Did a group of teachers go out and find a villa to share? It is nice to know that there are options.

Actually the Nizwa College of Applied Science has had significantly fewer complaints that some of the other branches in this group of Ministry colleges. All is relative... personally direct hire would be all that I would consider. But... all is relative. Laughing

A friend and I went out and found a fine villa/house. It is a single family house in an Omani neighborhood with houses widely spaced and all walled.

Some people have villas and some have apartments. The apartments are often quite large and nice, but some aren't. The housing director does not force you into something you don't want. Some people don't stand up for what they want, and take what is given. I am somewhat short on sympathy for them, and wonder how they have gotten this far in life just taking what is given.

I've a friend who works for Applied Sciences in another village, and she had to find her own housing, days after arriving and having started teaching immediately, and then she had to go out and find all of her own furnishings and appliances, including air-conditioners. In August. She had a housing and furnishing allowance, but it was hell to get this done on her own on her first time in Oman.

We at least had a half-way decent hotel for as long as we needed, provided by the university.

Yes, one must learn how to firmly, but politely stand up for yourself. I have been through the scramble for furnishing a flat a couple times in 40+ heat. Not fun - even when you know the ropes - especially as you don't have a car yet! This is when you want to go to work at a place with a more stable faculty... that has organized to help out newbies with shopping trips and such.

I think that we should pair up with newbies to at least give advice and show them the ropes. While I was stuck in a hotel waiting for housing many of the faculty had me and the other new people over for dinner. That was real nice, and won't be soon forgotten.

Next time it will be my turn, and I will try to pass on the kindnesses shown to me.

So Duffy, what is all new down your way?

Do you anticipate significant turn over this fall? It is becoming the time of year when the feet get itchy, although Salalah has always been pretty stable. It is so nice when there is a wonderful lifestyle beyond work! The magic of Salalah.

Have you seen these stories on Dhofar/Salalah?

The Mormon/Dhofar (Khor Kharfot) connection is an interesting story.

Well, Lulu's are building a huge hypermarket down in Al Wadi. Not far away another huge shopping mall is under construction. They are still putting up those fancy lightposts (prettier than those in Muscat IMHO). At the Salalah end of the Thumrait Road they are creating veritable gardens either side of the dual carriageway. Now I was wondering if all this public work has anything to do with the imminent return of the Sultan in to his home city??

There are a few teachers leaving Lala CoAS, but not that many. From what I gather, many of the new intake from last September are fairly happy.

Oh yes and I have submitted my MA thesis, I hope it will be accepted and be awarded around my 65th birthday in March.

It appears they are finally going to build the Lulu's in Nizwa at the Firq circle. A couple dozen backhoes and bulldozers have appeared on the site, though they are not kicking up dust yet. Scuttlebutt is that they are promising to open the doors in six months. We have given ourselves permission to be dubious about that. Laughing

Actually, when we passed the new Lulu's today we were saying how quickly it is going up. Just like the other complex near Hamdan. Other new buildings around the city seem to be creeping up. Guess it is all down to whoever is most profit driven.

Congratulations Duffy!

And what is all this guff about old dogs and new tricks. Way to go! Dhofar U next step or are you just going to enjoy the retired lifestyle in LaLa land. Do you have to do an oral defence of your thesis?

Will you miss the Thursday afternoon 'push and pull' of the old Lulu? Probably not.

Glad all is well in Lala land.
