I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on unlocked cell phones. How the work and should I buy one in the states or should I wait until I get to Mexico? |

I tried to unlock a prepaid cellphone from the States once in Tepito... They said it was impossible (for that phone). If it can't be done in Tepito, I doubt it can be done anywhere.
It's very difficult to get a plan as a foreigner (even with a FM-3).
Most folks (Gringos and Mexicans) just use pre-paid cell phone service. |

I bought an unlocked cell phone in the States. I just change the SIMS card when I change countries. I buy the pre-paid minutes. |

If you've got a cell phone that you use in the states, bring it down with you, and head to the local Plaza de Tecnologia. You should be able to find someone to unlock it for you cheap, and then buy a SIM card for whatever provider you want to go with. Or, if you don't have a cell phone of your own, just buy a cheap one when you get here, they run around $300 pesos for the most basic model w/no frills. And just about everybody uses pay-as-you-go refill cards, don't worry about a contract.
Cheers! |
