Ahem - ladies and gentlemen,
Sometimes we may forget that those who have not yet been to Saudi are often not very attuned as to what is permitted and what is not.
And I think we who have been there will likely agree that there are a lot of taboos in that society which an "outsider" might likely be unaware of.
Is the slack machine broken? Be gentle with the inexperienced, please. Were we not all once in the same situation?

Aw, crap. You are taking away all of our fun for the afternoon. I'm in bed sick- I have to have some diversion. Now I'll have to go pick scabs on the PMU threads.
Besides, we have to toughen him up before he gets to the Kingdom! |

| Shorts are not permitted in Saudi Arabia for foreigners. Saudi students seem to have no problem with them. |

In which country are khakis and polo shirts NOT acceptable in PUBLIC? Had he asked about said clothing items being acceptable or not in a university, I would understand.
^ As for shorts, they are acceptable in public as long as they reach/cover the knees, regardless of one's nationality/race. At least in Jeddah they are. (and Dhahran/Khobar by logical extension) |

Well on different occasions I dress accordingly. This is in Qassim province.
1. Shopping in a closed mall type building. Bermuda camouflage shorts with matching camo Saudi sandals and a T-shirt (NYC Statue of Liberty).
2. Wandering about town. Bermuda camouflage shorts with matching camo Saudi sandals and a T-shirt (May Allah grant a long life to the King. Guardian of the two holy temples. In Arabic).
3. In class. Dress pants, sleeved shirt, and sometimes tie.
I think that about covers it for (EXPAT) non-South/Asian men in one of the most conservative provinces of KSA.

I have been working the Kingdom of pain for about four years.
I take it upon myself to include a clause in all my contracts about
my attire. I only wear Throbes and patani/shalwar suits.
So my advice, is to inform your employer beforehand.
My employers have never had a problem with attire because
I look professional and my job performance is exceptionally.
Please make sure that you have a nice pressed throbe without holes and stains. Please avoid wearing the prison and light blue Shalwar suits.
I would only wear, white, black, grey, and gold.
Good Luck!! |

It depends on the employer but the chances are that they will not be enthusiastic about a foreigner who wants to wear a thobe and ghutra.
I would say that the Shalwar Kamiz is deffo a "NO-NO". See another thread where I described reaction of Director to a Canadian Buddhist who turned up wearing an Egyptian "Jalabiya".
This is not Height-Ashbury ! |

I guess we all have to wear our uniforms just to keep the teams straight?
The exception may be the British since we can all see which team they are on from the queue. |

There are websites that provide avatars that you can copy and paste the url. You may need to have 100 posts. You can check by going to your profile page and going all the way to the bottom of the page. The section will show up if you can have one... watch out that it isn't too big.
BTW... no problem with diamond nose stud. They are commonly worn by Indian women, so they are used to them. It is the other strange places that modern younguns stick these things... and/or over-large tattoos that may cause issues.
VS
(fancy outfits... but may not be quite proper as classroom attire. ) |

*sigh* Is that a fact.
Personally, I think shorts belong to the beach ONLY, and I stopped wearing them in all other contexts back when I was ten, but the above is simply false. I worked with a guy who thought nothing of wearing shorts to shopping trips to HyperPanda and Carrefour in the middle of Riyadh. Nobody ever said a thing to him, even if eyebrows were raised. |

Dear 7atetan,
Since you're being anecdotal, let me present my anecdote. A teacher at the IPA was arrested (in the mid 90s) for wearing shorts in public (at a Safeway supermarket in Riyadh.)
The Director of the ELC used his wasta to get him released, but the teacher had to spend the weekend in jail.
Regards,
John |
