Many native speakers don't know the difference between 's and s' for possessive.
E.G. childrens' or children's. For evidence you need only look at non teaching forums where the grammar and spelling is often atrocious. Maybe a reason why this board is popular is because that at least we can work out what the speaker is trying to say. (Yes we do make errors due to typos and alcohol-We are all guilty/human) |

Of course I agree that that is basically unreadable
So why not solve it with "I"s or "i"s or 'i's
..instead of using that apostrophe-plural atrocity??

I don't know - seems to me that using those darn "quotation marks" is more trouble and equally "intrusive".

| of course it's an extra character. but it avoids encouraging people to think that they can use apostrophes to make plurals.. which they are very tempted to do, sadly .. |
