But that all being said, the warning about recruiters are valid. Avoid the Chinese Culture Center in S.C., Network ESL, AITA

Lipps - why should we avoid these recruiters - after all we have one poster telling us that Network ESL are the best thing since sliced-bread - and you're telling us to give them a miss!!!!!
Anybody else confused?????????

and domestically registered organizations in your home country.

can you give us examples of recruiters that are registered in a western country - are you talking about the those awful low-paying sweat-shop language mills that run on an international basis - or even EFLtourist companies that send young folk - after they've paid a fee - on a lets play at being a teacher holiday?

the guy who told us to give network esl a miss forgot the most important part - why we should give them a miss.

its fine to say "this recruiter is useless" but only if you back it up with something. anything Exclamation

It would be helpful to give reason's why certain recruiters are bad.

Of course balanced against serious compelling evidence about why some of them are any good.

Here's a fine example of confusing hearsay from Lipps' post -
Quote:
Most schools nowadays only market and hire through recruiters.

How on earth would any ordinary FT be able to make that kind of blanket statement - especially when so many FT vets on this forum are telling the newbies that recruiters are a dodgy unneeded element in the job-finding game.
Lipps - what makes you so sure of your facts Question

As said before, the conflict of interest is one big problem.

Another is that few recruiters have ever visited the schools that they represent. Most of the time, they've never spoken spoken to the FAO.

I have to give the last recruiter who helped me kudos. The FAO tried to shaft me out of payment for Saturday English Corners. The recruiter read the FAO/waiban the Riot Act and got her to play fair.

My very worst experience with a recruiter was one who made it clear that she was an "available woman". She sent me pictures of herself and described how she was waiting for her father to turn over the family businesses to her. She would need someone who spoke English as well as I do and could travel freely between China and the U.S... blah, blah, blah.

Advice: if you get bad vibes from a recruiter, keep a'movin'.

Jayray - as someone who seems to have a fair bit of China experience - why do you use a recruiter????
The question isn't meant as a dig - just wanting a more credible picture regarding the recruiter game.

Lipps, I have used recruiter's for the past 10 years and have only ever run into a couple of minor problems being associated with the recruiter, whose services I have sought. Other problems have always been solely the result of action or inaction from the institution that I have worked for.

I prefer to work public universities. My experience** is that the public universities' FAO would rather not get involved in the hiring process because (I assume) that their English is not up to the task of hiring, or they just don't want to be bothered.

Most of my direct applications to public universities have either gone unanswered, or I've been referred to a recruiter.

Three times, though, I've managed to receive replies directly from a university, but I was in-country at the time. That may have something to do with it. When the candidate is in-country and can be seen in person, it's probably more likely that they're willing to take the risk of a direct-hire. I met with only one of them, and it was a whole 'nuther experience being schmoozed by the FAO than by a recruiter. It was probably the best Chinese school I've worked for. I'll probably return there next year after I finish my current gig.

** Results may vary.
