Is that common? The school will continue to pay my rent but I will not receive my salary for the 2 months of summer. I am signing a 12 month contract.
Is this something that can be easily negotiated? |

I've been wondering about that myself. I THINK my current employer is going to start that (no pay for summer, keep the apartment). It wasn't like that before, I received my full pay the entire time I was under contract. There was some "give" on my part, the original contract was for half pay for summer with a round-trip ticket to the US, so it was a better deal for them (far less money). IF THIS OCCURS, I'm debating whether I shoud accept. Is this happening to anyone else? |

anything can be negotiated.
what are the exact dates on your contract?
some schools (universities) will pay you (full salary or half salary) if you sign on for another year. other schools wont pay you anything over the summer, even if you do sign on again. |

I have a 12 month contract. I am paid whether I have classes or not. During the summer, I will work the 6 week summer camp and have two weeks off after that until the new school year starts. But, I also have two months off paid at end of semester/Winter Festival break. I will also have 3 - 4 weeks off in June when they prepare for end of year exams.
I don't get/didn't want the R/T airfare since this is home now, so as a trade-off, I get all this time off during exam prep months as well as the normal holidays. I have my own home, so the living stipend is year-round, as well.
So, no R/T airfare, but approx. 3 1/2 months paid time off a year. Other benefits are paid medical and dental insurance. Medical evacuation insurance. One month of paid sick leave if needed. All government fees paid relating to working papers. Commute transportation costs reimbursed monthly. Also have a dorm room for when I am there for my long two day week as well as free meals.
Everything is negotiable. What you get depends solely on what you ask for and are willing to negotiate calmly and logically. Being complete rigid will get you less than being flexible.
Think about everything on the menu and then fill your plate. More of this, less of that, does it really matter as long as it all ends up at the same place?
If they want you to stay year after year, then it is their best interest to make sure you have an enjoyable, stress free summer break without worrying about money or travel or medical expenses or anything other than whatever you want to do so you can come back refreshed and energetic enough to dance through another year.
My school wants me to stay indefinitely, so they make sure that I do not have any concerns other than my classes and my family. I am lucky. |

Be VERY, VERY, VERY careful about this mindset. I know of two schools whose administration constantly tells their FTs that they want them to be happy and, "...stay for a long time with us," then they dump the FT and the end of 3-6 months simply because they want fresh (foreign) faces.
NO ONE is indispensible and you certainly can't take promises, goodwill, or verbal stroking to the bank. |

I'm pretty much in the same boat as chengdu4me. I'm in the midst of my 5th contract (after a nice 3-month leave of absence back in the states) and we sign new contracts every spring and, to date, I've always received a little more something upon every new signing - - usually a little more pay. This coming contract, I will have a full health insurance policy as well as an extra 5% retirement bonus (5% of my net salary added on in other words). It's just a matter of finding that (almost) perfect school, doing a good job for them, getting in good with the higher-ups, and sticking around, if that's what you want. |

You are absolutely right, Sinobear. Everyone must make sure that the schools actions speak louder than their words. It is OK to trust, but verify their words by making sure that the action follows it. The more this happens without a hitch, the more trust you can afford them. It is no different than anywhere else. You earn your credibility. I am lucky and I know it. I read story after story here about FT's being screwed over.
Everything I have gotten from the school, they offered. In fact, they even raised my salary by 2,000 RMB a month after we had agreed on a lower amount and we had signed the contract. We had gotten into a discussion about the long-term stability of the school and when they heard my position on recruiting and retaining teachers as being in the best interest for the students, as well as my ability to create and produce tutorials for the staff to make it easier for them to work through the new hire process (I am paid extra for this work), they decided they wanted me to be a long-term employee of the school and they made sure that I have no complaints. I don't have any complaints. They treat me great. They pay me well and they do not quibble about anything I ask for. I just get it.
Each year, my salary will go up by a predetermined and agreed upon amount. Same with my living stipend. The other benefits will remain as long as I am there. My work week is 13 classes in two days. Each class being 40 minutes.
As far as being replaced at the drop of a hat, I don't doubt that for even one second. But, they also know I don't care. I don't NEED to work and if they want me, they have to pay me and treat me well. One thing we are both aware of it how much time, trouble and cost there is in recruiting a new FT. If they get me to stay, they save that money every year. I think this may be the deciding factor in how I am treated. They know I don't give a flip about their stupid Z visa, their resident permit or anything else. I can live here just fine on an extended L visa due to having a Chinese wife. The ball is in my court and will stay that way and they know it. If they ever break any promises or don't provide what they have promised to provide... we will talk about it. If they do not rectify the situation immediately...I'm gone! I won't even finishing teaching out the day.
But, all in all, it is a good experience at this school. Yes the kids are brats from overly indulgent parents and too much money. The kids know that if they want to learn, I am here to teach..if they don't want to learn, STFU and let those who do want to learn, do so. |
