| I am a teacher here married to a Viet. I went down to The Departmnet of Immigration to get a permenant residence permit which I thought I was entitle to according to Viet law. Instead they gave me a Certificate of Visa Exemption which is good for 5 years. It is also a multientry permit. It says that it is only good for 90 days each entry. Does that mean I have to leave the country every 3 months and then come back in? If so that is CRAZY!!!! |

Yes, you still have to leave Vietnam every 90 days, and return. I am not sure if a bus ride will do, or if you have to fly out.
2 of my friends that are married here have the same Certificate of Visa Exemption.
Note: ** they do not have a right to work in VN with this certificate of visa exemption unless they have a work permit. |

| I found the law regarding this as of 2008. You can still stay longer than 3 months but that means you have to get a visa and pay for it. Currently they are restricting visas to 3 months but with a work permit or you have ownership in company you can get longer. What is not being said is that yes they still have temporary and permanent residence permits for foreigner married to Vietnamese but they make it very difficult to get now. get a Viet lawyer with connections and you too can get a 3 year permit |

I know a man who's married and has one of those 5 year visa exemption certificates. He said he either sends his wife to the border every 3 months or he pays some extra money at the immigration dept and they put exit and entry stamps in his passport as though he had left the country.
However, this is hearsay. |

Nope. I just finished renewing my 3 month Visa for a whooping 10 USD. My wife did have to go to Immigration though (as she is my sponsor now) and she had to go to the local Police to get their permission for me to stay here (which meant a couple of hundred VND to grease the wheels) but all-in-all nobody even wanted to see me and wanted my wife to do it all.
Send your wife to Immigration on Nguyen Van Cu. |

Hi. Did your wife bring any form to the police beforehand for them to sign, or did she go to immigrations first before she went to the police? Was this permission form something like the Temporary Residence Certificate "Don Xin Xac Nhan"? |

| All of this is so very crazy! You gotta love this country. The laws are interpreted the way anyone wants. I suspect they wanted your wife to do everything because they do not want to have to speak English. I have seen that in many government offices here that they will talk to my wife even though they can speak English (guess they are afraid that they might say something wrong) |

So these new regulations aren't as big as they seem to be?
For a newbie for instance, he/she will not have a problem getting a work permit and staying as an expat if they choose to do so? |

I have one more question regarding the process. Did immigration hold the passport for a week or something, or was it a quick time stamp and you're out the door?

Sorry for the slow reply. She went to Immigration first to get the forms (2) then went to the police. It's not a Temporary Residence Card but since she's not from HCMC, she did have to show other paperwork proving she had permission from her local police to be living here. She finished up with our District's local police, went back to Immigration to drop off the paperwork, and a week later went back to pay the $10 and pick up my passport. BTW it's a stamp renewing the "Visa Exemption".[/quote] |
