IPS in Khobar is a great school to work at: great staff, good conditions. However, make sure you know what you are getting into .
First, you might be told that the students are American and Canadians. In fact they are American and Canadian passport holders. This is an ESL school. Also, Saudi nationals are increasingly inrolling at the school. Second, you might be told that the staff stays on the school's compound, and you might be shown pictures of the facilities that will be at your disposal there. This was true years ago, but now, all new staff is housed in other compounds and the services vary from compound to compound. Third, it is a Saudi school. This means that is must follow ministry regulations: segragation, no music program, islamic studies... Also the ministry may change these requirements and regulations at any time.you need to be aware that although you will be promised a legal work visa, at the present time, the school has still not provided these for some of the teachers hired last year. Not work visa means: no bank account, not cell phone, no internet, no leaving the country during the year, no legal recourse, possible taxation issues in your own country and you could get kicked out of the country at any moment.
Again, it is a great school, but know what you are getting into before signing a contract with them. |

Well, could you please explain to me, in plain simple English, the difference between "American and Canadians" and "American and Canadian passport holders"?
I did not know that there are Americans which are not "Americans passport holders"! But, I know that there are Indians, Pakistani, Egyptians, Scottish, with American and Canadian passports, but not the opposite! (well, may be there are Americans with British passport). |

I mean by passport holders, kids who have a Canadian or American passport, but have never lived or gone to school in these countries.
IPS stands for International Programs School. |

I recall a fellow Lebanese teacher who was pregnant and jumped on a plane to visit a relative in the US when it was due so that her kid would have a US passport. (as everyone in her family did) I was told this was very common. Rather an abuse of the US system, but was a common sense decision giving her children an option if they ever needed it.
So, it is relatively easy to have an American passport without ever living there. Can they do that in Canada too?

I've always found that odd about the US--handing out passports to anyone born there, even if their parents are not US citizens--"generous" I suppose. |

Well, thanks to the 14th Amendments Citizenship Clause of Uncle Sam and his Birthright citizenship that any baby born in USA can get automatic USA citizenship, even if his father/mother are not American citizens and are in short visit only! And because of the family reunification clause, that the tribe (other family members) of that baby can join him in USA and get USA citizenship, what a generosity from Uncle Sam!
"Under United States law, any person born within the United States (including the overseas territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands [1] and subject to its jurisdiction is automatically granted U.S. citizenship, [2] as are many (though not all) children born to American citizens overseas."

My question to Teta VS, what do you understand by " subject to its jurisdiction"? |

I knew people from Sudan who flew the wife to Detroit in her last months of pregnancy so that the baby would be born American. They proudly told me that it was such a good decision because the the birth was "free" at an excellent US hospital. Guess they just went into the emergency room as the birth was imminent, and left without paying. And people wonder why our health care costs for citizens is so high!
Sorry, I know I sound like Lou Dobbs....but this sort of stuff just ticks me off. |

Well, Teta Mia, not anymore for Sudanese citizens to easily travel to USA!
Now Uncle Sam has put a new screening law in which Citizens of Sudan, Magic Kingdom, Iran, Syria, and other countries, will face the X screening in airports before they board the plane to USA!
I have heard that an American (with blue eyes) was refused to board a plane to USA in Egypt airport because he was in Yemen attending an Arabic school!
No guaranty Teta Mia, your USA citizenship may be withdrawn any time! |
