Hi All, we making the plunge and coming to taipei for the 2010/2011 school year... now starts the planning...
job organised and accommodation ok..
what do we bring??? any suggestions of must have items?

Bring warm clothing for the kid and for yourselves. It doesn't get as cold as it does in the northern latitudes, but it gets cold and raw, because monsoon runs from late December to May. So lots of rain in Taipei. Rain gear and umbrellas don't cost that much in Taiwan, so easy to get.
Bring an international drivers license for both a motorcycle and car if you can. You will need it to drive a scooter, which is a very convenient way to get around.
Your family will feel some tremors (minor earthquakes) every now and then, so convince your family not to worry too much about them.
Make sure you have all your paper work in order as well. Get plenty of photos for the visa process. They are cheap out here as well; especially if you have them already on a diskette.
Bring plenty of CDs or have them all on a MP3.
Bring the camera along.
I can't think of anything else, because I am in a noisy Internet cafe at the moment.
Taiwan pretty much has everything that you could get in your home country.
What you could do is ask questions about whether or not Taiwan has things that you will need when you get over here.
Or course bring a couple thousand dollars or so...
If I think of anything else, then I will bring it up later, but I am sure that Rooster or the others will offer their input soon enough...  |

That all depends on what job you have and what plans you have for your child.
1) Are you going to be a teacher?
2) At a Public or Private school?
3) At an International or Local school?
4) What care/schooling provisions to do you have planned for your child?
Could list reams of advice but you'll need to show a few more of your cards to get good advice.
Don't forget your toothbrush.

How old is your child? The selection of pediatric goods here is fairly wide, but there might not be the exact same brands that you enjoy using.
There are a couple of ointments that we pick up in Canada for our 1.5 year old, and we always stock up on AfterBite, because that's not available here. Other than that, we've been able to find everything we need. Another poster had it right about bringing some good warm clothes for your kid. Taipei winters are wet, cool and windy.
I'm afraid that's all the advice I have, but if you head over to forumosa they have a parenting forum that should be able to answer your questions better. |

gangerousapple - our little man will be two by the time we get to Taipei...
LKJ- yes i'm going to be a kindegarden teacher in a small private, international school. my husband will be looking after our son for the first while and when he is settled he will go to play group 2/3 mornings and my husband wants to study part time/ correspondence... |

I dont want to be the bearer of bad news but I wish you all the best upon arrival.
However you're arriving at probably the worst time for joining the teaching industry. Jobs are scarce, money is very tight, and that is significant when you come to educate your child. Be open minded about Taiwan but realise you will have enormous challenges ahead as a couple and as parents. |
