So everyone knows you have to register your residence within three days of arriving in Russia. You also must register within three days of renewing your visa. Well, this is my third visa renewal this time and it slipped my mind. Big mistake. The poor girl who was responsible for this at the school got a 40k ruble minimum fine (several months pay) and I got a 2k fine. If the institution itself is fined the minimum is 400,000. And you don't want to meet these people at the registration office--they are miserable and yell at you and threaten deportation.

Moral of the story: don't mess with the Russian bureaucracy!

Just out of curiosity, whose fault was it? You mentioned the girl who lost several months' salary.

A similar situation happened to me many moons ago. You're right on MM, don't forget to register! Otherwise, it's a lot of money and a lot of hassle.
I actually had a chat with the FSB over my school's failure to register me Sad

GF, I don't know exactly how it works but they said that they could either fine the person responsible (secretary) with a 40k fine or fine the institution itself which is a 400k fine. So even though legally the school wasn't obligated to help pay the fine I think ethically they should have helped. But it's Russia...
