Hey guys... Im my waiting for a response form Dipont I have had an offer made for a school in Guangzhou (EF) now I know EF have a bad rep and I am not asking for peoples opinions about the company...

They have offered me 13000RMB a month and I was wondering if in China Guangzhou thisis a good salary? How much is rent on average... and would I be able to save a little or travel?

Are there any teachers earning that salary in Guangzhou.

Thanks

You'll net 9K and that's NOT a good offer for GZ.

I know we're not supposed to wade into personal views on these boards, but personally, you seem to be desperate. You questions and posts are naive in the extreme, and my personal view is that you are "chasing rainbows."

You won't get a truly decent salary anywhere until either you've paid your dues (that is, be able to prove your worth to an employer), develop the all-important connections to get you a comfy position, or get hired by a JV.

To say that you want advice, but don't want people's opinions is akin to asking, "Hey! I want to try cocaine but I don't want to hear anything negative about it."

Get real.

It's a good salary, as Tomstone says. Yes, you can save a few thousand a month if you don't go really wild.

Sinobear, where do you get 9K from? He'll net far more than that if you're talking about tax. And he can rent a decent place for around 2K.

His request was for advice on the salary, not on the company - reasonable enough.

EF offers 13K GROSS for a DOS position. You pay accomodations, your insurance (supposed to be covered by the company anyway), return ticket (should be covered by the company but that's part of your 'salary')...So what's advertised is not what you get.
And after living in GZ for 7 years, I can tell you that you can rent a decent place for 3K/mo unless you consider your parent's basement a 'decent' place.

Why would any school, anywhere in China, offer a salary that would not sustain its new hire for the contract duration?

My salary in Guangzhou was 21,500 per month so stop bragging.

"EF Pay 12500 GROSS for teachers with experience NOT for DOS!"

So, what is the 13k for? DOS? 500 more per month is lovely!

Let me elaborate: I applied to EF for a DOS position to "test the waters." Their advertised salary: 15K RMB/mo. I asked, "Net or gross?" Their answer? 9K RMB/mo net. Your air travel, accomodation and insurance (which should be paid for by the company) is part of your salary.

Please. 40 hrs/wk should be netting you at least 20K RMB/mo. GZ is one of the most expensive cities to live in (I'd say cheaper than Shanghai but on par with Beijing). You'd have to be either unqualified or desperate (or both) to consider EF as a starting point for any of the major cities in China.

There's really no point in asking for other people's opinions if you're not willing to take the good with the bad. Certainly if you can't make decisions for yourself or take a chance or a leap of faith (not in the religious sense) then you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY do not belong here.

Mr. Ed mentioned a salary of 21.5K RMB/mo, I think that's reasonable and obtainable IF you meet the gov't requirements AND you can back up your promises with results.

Simply looking for the highest pay possible in a major city, without experience, connections, or credentials, is naive...infantile, immature, reckless, daft, (add your own synonym for 'stupid' here).

Not look for it, perhaps, but they should certainly expect nothing more than that, no matter where they are in the world.

Realism is the key to starting any job, even a TEFL one in China.

Once you are in a job, though, you can scout the territory for something better in the future.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Can I just say to certain people (no names mentioned) as I stated I was aware of EF rep before posting and number of working hours ect and I was not looking for negative comments about the company etc, I just wanted to know if it was enough to live on the salary offered in GZ!

besides, I have a degree and a PGCE and also a CELTA, an international school based in Oxford is interesrted in my application and they have branches in Xi'an, Tianjin and Jinan so chances are I might not make it to GZ in the end !

Does anyone have any info on Xi'an, Tianjin or Jinan?

Thanks

May I ask the OP, what qualifications and experience do you have to get offered that amount gross per month by EF?
