One rule of thumb no one has mentioned. Ask yourself the one question that counts: do you save money where you are now?

If not, forget it. Contrary to popular belief, saving is a lifestyle and as such cannot be achieved through applying a range of tips borrowed from an online forum.

Dang. That was a tip wasn't it... Evil or Very Mad

Shmooj makes a good point. Saving is a conscious effort one has to make and have the discipline to follow through ... something I lacked until recently! If you do save money, exchange it immediately (based on daily rates) into your home currency. You won't be able to spend it then. Putting your cash in your savings account back home is good, but remember that interest is taxable. If possible, try to put your money in tax-free investments (whether they be short or long term, you'll have some money when you return home.

Depends. If you are a Brit and a non-resident for tax purposes and do have sizeable interest from savings, you can sign a form stating you are non-resident for tax purposes and pocket all the interest.

I get about 20p a year interest so don't ask me where you get the form!
