I'm in Thailand now, and I want to go up to Beijing, but I'm almost out of money (long story). I won't be able to make enough in Thailand to stay, but I think I might be able to do it in Beijing if I work a few jobs and do some private lessons. I'm hoping to make about 13000 yuan a month and save half of that so I can keep paying my bills back home. If I work weekends and live in a cheap apartment, would it be possible? I've been there before, but I was making 3500 a month teaching a few classes a week at my university, so I'm not really sure what it would be like to go back just to work. |

Maybe could get a university job for about 5,000 or 6,000 with apartment included and then do a part-time job in a language training center to earn additional money. |

Saving money is not about how much you make. It is all about how much you spend.
A foreign teacher in Wuhan went out drinking 5 nights a week and complained he could not save any money. lol |

You can easily make over 20,000 a month in Beijing, but you will have little time for yourself.
Lots of jobs offered in kindergartens that pay 8000 just for the morning. Then you can find another kindergarten that is about the same just for the afternoon. Then again in the evening tutoring or teaching evening classes to adults or teens.
Doable, but as I said, you will be tired as all heck. |

well if you found a bar that sold a beer for 10rmb - averaged your beers to a more than generous 5 beers/night - then you wouldn't be spending much more than 1000rmb/month - hardly a break the bank amount of money that condemns the FT to live the life of a monk !!!!!
I think a far more important question for those who enjoy a nightly tipple - would be where to find a good bar with decent priced beer (some bars are so expensive that they border on the ridiculous) - and most importantly, who to enjoy them with. After all if you're out drinking alone each night - what's the point of being in China? |

While it is nice to go to a bar and hear a band play or try to meet ladies, an even better idea is to buy a case of beer and have a few people over to your apartment.
Unless your goal is to meet someone of the opposite sex or hear a band play, what use is it for 2 or more people of the same sex to go to a bar and chat? Granted, you might meet someone who can help you get a better job, but, if all you do is talk to the people you went to the bar with, what use is it?
Instead of paying 10 rmb in a bar (most likely more) or maybe even 6 rmb at a local noodle shop on the street that serves semi-cold beer, I think it is better to pay 60 or less for the case and get the bottles nice and cold!
As for saving money in Beijing, I wouldn't know because I never lived there, but, based on my experience in Shanghai and Guangzhou - it can be done. It has been said numerous times on this website - avoid western restaurants and bars.
If you are inclined to go to a western restaurant and then drink at a bar every night you won't save much. |

Thanks a lot for the replies. It will be easy for me to avoid western food, and I'm definitely going to stay away from western bars (other than once in a while on the weekends). I just want to work, study Chinese, and drink tea. Once I get my financial situation straightened out, I'll be able to relax a little, and maybe try living in another province in China. |

Would you be able to give me the names of some kindergartens that might be hiring? I'm from the US and I have a B.S., but no TEFL certificate. |
