Does anyone know anything about this position?

The Opportunity
We seek faculty excited by the prospect of growth in the teaching and research programs of the institution. Qualified faculty is sought at the levels of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, and Instructor for the academic year 2010-2011 (which starts in September 2010). University instructions are delivered in English with the exception of courses in Arabic and Islamic Studies.

Instructors are expected to be holders of a relevant "Master's Degree". The principal responsibilities of faculty are undergraduate instruction and active research. Excellent research facilities and a variety of support services are provided.

I don't see any "position" there... looks to me like all the departments are hiring. I suspect that if you go to their website and search the employment section, it will list specific departmental openings and the requirements. Mostly they hire PhDs for content courses... if they can get them.

According to the UAEU jobs vacancies board they have 15 openings for instructors.

Not all that many, and almost all of them seem to require a Phd.

UAEU has instructions to become a world class university.

I'd expect most of their opportunities to require a PhD.

Ie. ----- up the ante, guys..... Stop hiring BA/MA recipients --- stop hiring people with mail order degrees ---- and go for the gold.

It may be the case that they are looking for PhDs but every uni in the Gulf is as well. And I cant see why someone who just got a PhD from, say, Texas, would go to start a research career in the Gulf.

The original quote goes back to Latin:

Death is the great leveller.

But another Latin quote seems to contradict it to some degree:

Death snatches away the most deserving, and leaves the wicked.

And, of course, I am living proof that "Only the good die young."

But more to the point, I'd have to say that I found the Middle East to be most unlevel, at least as far as the living are concerned.

I publish in A and B journals mostly and I have moved to the Gulf only 3 months after finishing my PhD with a top uni.

By the logic of levelling, would I then publish in A and A+ had I stayed in the UK? Possibly, because among my colleagues there would be more editors of nicer journals whom I'd have Wasta with.

In exchange, the weather would be truly crap, especially right now and I would probably try to save some time and money to holiday in Oman to get some sun. I would still live in a bad part of London, surrounded by council estates, yobbs, crack hookers, drunkards and all sorts of other people I have almost forgotten about, pay a fortune for plumbers to fix the truly crap bathroom I would inevitably have and get run over by Chelsea tractors while cycling to work in the rain.

I could continue this list for a long time but I guess if levelling means having less Wasta with the editors and still publishing decent papers in decent journals while also having a nice life, fine, thanks for levelling me to the PhD graveyard.
