Hi. This forum is a great resource, but I've had difficulty getting a clear picture of the current situation.
I'm thinking of flying over mid-march-april to Bangkok and looking for a job, and would like to know how realistic my prospects are of getting a decent living situation.
I have a poor degree (2:2 audio technology!) from 10yrs ago. I have a CELTA grade B and 2 months experience teaching in a cosy school in Guatemala.
It shouldn't matter, but I look the part 30, male, caucasian, young professional looking.
Will I get an ok job? failing that will I get something to survive on! What salary can I expect?
Can you clarify something about my cost of living/wages as opinions seem to vary wildly?
My basic needs are: a decent room (i.e. safe, quiet inside the building) with internet, travel to and from work (I am experienced on chicken buses if they're not too hellish), ok work clothes and laundry of the same, food (I like to eat a healthy diet, but don't need expensive imported stuff...can probably eat thai street food ok)
I don't want to spend loads on dvd's etc or regular trips. I like socialising a lot, but don't drink or smoke so a couple of waters a night will do me. I would like to get to the expat areas and hang out in bars on a regular though.
Possible? |

Anyone clue me?
I don't want help finding a job, just to assess the situation. |

Thanks for the info...but others suggest coming early for the term starting in May. Is this not a good idea? |

I am not sure what the previous poster is on about......April is a really good time to be here.
'Boots on the ground', so to speak. Ideal month to be looking for vacancies for the new academic year beginning May. (For most Thai schools) |

Antsea,
With your education and teaching experience I think your best bet would be teaching at Thai government schools. Most pay (if not all) around Thai Baht 30,000 - 35000/Month. If you want to live like a Thai this salary would be sufficient however my advice is to freelance and teach business/incompany classes to subsize your income so you can enjoy your time in Thailand and save some money too! |
