What's the going rate for part-time teaching in Shanghai?

Would private students pay more than a part-time gig through a school or agency?

Really, no one knows? I see everything from 100RMB to 300RMB in the job adverts and it's not always easy to tell the difference between the positions.

I'm in a rural area of Henan Province, cost of living is quite a bit lower than Shanghai, and I charge 200 RMB per hour for 1 to 6 students. That's for private students only, I don't know about agency stuff.

I am living and working here now and have worked here on and off for over 7 years.IMHO, you shouldnt work in SH for less than 150/hour, but unfortunatly, many newbies come here in search of work and take jobs paying 80-120/hr. This spoils it for the rest of us trying keeping our 200+/hour jobs, the "any white monkey will do" mindset is everywhere here in China...

Thanks for the replies. All the offers I'm getting are 120/hr and I've been turning them down so far. I've got four years of experience, Trinity TESOL, I should be getting more, methinks.

But yes, I have been told by more than one person that they'd rather hire the inexperienced teacher and pay less because all they want is conversation, no "real teaching." Their words.
