So, understandably you should hold out and negotiate the best contract for what you are worth, but what if you dont know what you are worth?
I would be interested to hear some thoughts on what some of these qualifications might be worth with regards to basic salary (assuming housing is paid, typical vacation, basic package). I know the dynamics of ones resume and experience make it almost impossible, but can I get some opinions on a general price range? Lets say 1-2 years experience (minimal).
BA Englit + TESOL
Negotiate for- ?
Dont accept below- ?
MEd + TESOL
Negotiate for- ?
Dont accept below- ?
I guess this answer would vary by city too, so let's say Riyadh or Jeddah.
Any ideas? |

First of all salaries tend to be lower in Jeddah. Higher for men generally. |

Why are salaries lower in Jeddah? Is the cost of living lower? |

I believe that the NKVD were a nicer bunch and Stalin objected to MAO`s worst extremes. |

The cost of living is slighly lower in Jeddah than in Riyadh, but not enough to warrant singificantly lower salaries. Besides, I'm not sure salaries are any lower if you compare like with like. I know that the private women's colleges in Jeddah pay the same - if not more - than their counterparts in Riyadh, so it depends. Perhaps people get the impression salaries are higher in Riyadh because there is a wider range of employers there, including the military contractors who pay very well - if you are male.

it certainly can't hurt to try to negotiate, but be aware than many emploeyrs have a 'take it or leave it' approach. If you get an initial offer which you think is too low, politely tell them you were expecting a better offer and would they consider improving it? They may do so - I know people who've got substantial raises just by askign nicely - but they may not. You're more likely to be able to negotiate succesfully with smaller institutions, and of course it helps if you know someone there and/or have some particular qualities that will make them want to go out of their way to employ you. |

Umm AW, I would (loosely) say that you can expect around 12-15K SAR/month, be it government or private places. Also, a key negotiating strategy is to not want the job too much, else they'll play you like a puppet - be prepared to walk away.
kazazt, Jeddah is, for the most part, a dump! Many times you see sewage in the streets (even in the north!), many arterial roads are dug up so traffic is a 'mare, to say the least. Also, with the 'Musk Lake' (where all our sewage goes!) - that's a timebomb!
Quite pathetic for the second city of one of the richest countries in the world that's next to the sea!!
Scot, one can at least say that the black stuff under the ground is in the east, hence Haramco (sic)! |

The expansion of Jeddah in the last 40 years did not include provision of sewers. You can imagine what that means in a city which now has a population of 3 million plus.
Perhaps the authorities should have invested in sewers and a sewage treatment facility instead of giving all that money to British Aerospace.
Alas for Humanity, Aeronautical Engineering is more glamorous than processing human waste products. They all want to be fighter pilots. No one wants to be an operative in a Sewage Plant. |

Thanks for the replies. I guess some of the posts that I've seen concerning people who learned that they were getting a lot less than their co workers who had the same (or less) qualifications probably resulted from jobs through a recruiter. It seems from this post that perhaps direct hire jobs have their salaries more defined, hence the "take it or leave it approach" mentioned.
Thanks! |
