@Desert Traveler. Well, it is more than just money. The project expects a certain level of experience and qualification from the teacher. In return, the teacher expects remuneration and professional treatment by the project that is in accordance. It should be a meeting of parity, not a master, servant situation. If the project wants yes people and drones they should continue with the kind of teachers they had before. Under your theory people should, and will, do anything for a sum of money. The turnover at the end of term will reflect on whether your theory is correct.

11 month contract, 30 days summer hols, state-of-the-art facilities (like no photocopier?!)...this BS list goes on.

I have had no dealings with the ORD, nor do I plan on, but I wage war on all cheap employers!! Who's willing to join my coalition of the willing? Or could I perhaps join yours...?! Laughing

Agreed. But it will be interesting to see if Bell maintain their contract with KSU next year. There are rumours on the men's side that they may not.

I'm tempted to apply. It pays better than where I am presently (about 35% more) and that's quite important at the minute. I have a friend that started there recently and he says it's bearable for a year or two.

11 months salary for the year ? One month unpaid summer holiday ? No thanks. I will leave that for the suckers and the desperate.

to get the real monthly salary figure you have to multiply the salary offer by 11 and then divide it by 12 (one month is unpaid, which is outrageous by the way)

so for example they make an offer for a basic salary of SAR 10k per month

10 000 x 11 = 110 000 (you are going to get paid 11 times over the year)

110 000 / 12 = 9167 (we spread the 11 salaries over the 12 months of the year)

so you actual monthly salary for the whole year resulting from that contract is going to be SAR 9167

or just apply a factor of 0.92 to the salary offer to get a realistic figure

it may not seem to be a big deal to lose out on a months salary when you are negotiating for the job, but i a sure it WILL be when there is no money coming at the end of the 12th month

one of the reasons i am ardently opposed to this ORD/KSU employment is exactly this (even though i got an offer from them a year or two ago)

teachers deserve a paid summer holiday

if thats how they treat their teachers (employees?) then that sort of treatment will manifest elsewhere as well, not only with this issue

still good for the desperate for money, though

and i am fortunate not to be THAT desperate as for now

I agree with Scot47 and desert_traveller, leave Bell/Obeikan and others like them for the desperate. These companies don�t deserve professionals. I think it is a shame they can get away with offering such lousy packages, but they do get what they pay for which is why these places are such a disaster. I hope that someday these universities will care about quality education.

I have seen/heard absolutely no evidence to suggest there is any truth in that rumour. On the contrary, all indications are that "image" works.

Well, we'll see about that. His second year will be a lot harder than his first, assuming he gets to the end of year one...

A lot of people continue to comment on the 11-month rip-off contract. But I don't see that many better deals around--the overall package at KSU is still not bad for considering the low qualification threshold. Having said that, I am starting to feel silly working there.

as far as i know and my as far as my info is accurate, bell never had a contract with ksu

ord outsourced recruitment to bell, thats pretty much all they do

bell is a recruiting agent and, we have to give it to them, they very openly admit it in their job ad on tefl.com:

All employment contracts will be with our Partner, Obeikan Education. For our partners Bell provides Employment Agency Services as defined in the Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003.

Is nationality not a pervasive concern of employers in Saudi Arabia? What justifies singling out recruiters? Though I don't mean to bait or debate your raising the issue of ethnicity and citizenship to an international board. The issue quickly confounds idealistic liberals upon arrival.
And chagrin toward recruiters and contractors is to be expected by a generation of teachers familiar with direct hire. But that market, baby, it will not be ignored or denied. Education around the world is being "market-tested" by governments overwhelmed in their maintenance of Great Society promises. Had Bush the Younger succeeded in his "voucher" program, nation wide, a corporate market would have had its swath.

I don't think he stated that this was only true of recruiters or even this employer... it is true of all employers... all over the Gulf. It is just a fact of life there and has nothing to do with the neocon dreams of corporatizing everything in the US.
