It is a great day for Saudi women!
I had students who really wanted to be lawyers- and it is not too late for them to be come a part of this change.
Next up- driving! |

Well, yes it is.
But I don't think it's going to happen any time soon. |

Progress would be a decent and civilised public transport system. That ain't gonna happen soon either in this nation of car-worshippers. |

In Kuwait I met a woman who was originally Saudi but was widowed to a Kuwaiti many years earlier. She was driving an SUV full of her family when she picked me up. She was not wearing an abaya, just a headscarf and Westernish dress.
I have never been to the Kingdom so I was curious to hear her compare experiences of both countries. I said that she must like having the freedom to drive, but she said she preferred Saudi because there she was always chauffeured around everywhere and she'd rather not be bothered with driving!
It came as a bit of a shock to me, but was just another lesson in leaving one's expectations at home. |

Dear Kornan DeKobb,
Very true - by no means do all Saudi women long for the right to drive.
However, that lady you met probably wouldn't have ever discovered that she preferred being chauffeured had she never gotten the chance to drive.
Regards,
John |

Well, she sounds like an airhead. What a dumb statement. After all, she can always hire a chauffeur in Kuwait. The difference is, in Kuwait she always has the freedom to drive the thing herself if need be. |

Now SnB... I think you are not reading carefully enough before you judge this woman. It says that she is a widow. Thus, hiring a driver is probably an impossibility either financially or culturally or both.
Not to mention that in Saudi she had probably been young with no responsibilities... now she is the "driver" for her family it appears. You do tend to be very quick to insult women when you post before you think.

Oh, I think I'm an equal-opportunity goombah and breaker of legs. One need merely look at my slings and arrows cast at the likes of 007 or, just now, Umm al Abdullah or whatever his name is... Men get it too, for sure!
It says she's a widow, but the logic of her statement appears faulty nonetheless. In any case the person in question is not a poster here, so may be considered essentially an abstract entity for our purposes, |

Well, it seems that the Cuban cigare of Uncle Castro is preventing our cowboy, Sheikh Nano, to think before posting!

Well, the logic of life is "think before posting"!
Teta VS and the women society of the Magic Kingdom are waiting for an apology from you! |

Dear Sheik,
I'm trying to imagine this
"Yippee-kai-yay, mother******"
said with a New Jersey/Italian-American accent.
Difficult - but not impossible.

As a non-adherent of the Cult of Ford, I find it hard to get excited about the "freedom" to drive a motor vehicle. |
