Rather than bitching about things again, I decided to channel my Interview #10 travesty into a hand-drawn comic.
Enter Mark Teacher.
No, my name isn't Mark, but every other teacher is named Mark. It's the most common name for an English teacher.

Way to vent! Long time lurker, seldom poster. Taught in Japan 2007-2008. Looking to get back into teaching (2 years back in the USA was more than enough) and have been following your saga. Shame, since Taiwan is a vibrant place.
I've been considering Guangdong province as well, having studied both Cantonese and Mandarin.
BTW--your comic reminded me of another site that, (having just checked) is still going, but in blog format now.

Best of luck to you. |

The site I posted--he's in Saudi Arabia now, but previously taught in Russia. He made these crude drawings of the drunken debauchery he used to get into. |

Nice work with those pictures. Pity about the job, unless you are still waiting to hear back from them. However, going by your comic... |

Funny Teenagers are a tough crowd to do a demo in front off! I would have "died" if that happened to me! It's a bit unfair to ask you to do a demo with a teenage class - you work your way into teenagers - you don't just walk in expect them to interact like old friends with a virtual stranger. Specially in Taiwan where there's this added thing about "Let's stare the FT out of the room with our silence and stares."
Oh well - hope you'll have some luck somewhere. Saw a posting on Kaohsiung Living from a school - stay away from them. Haven't heard good things about them(the one that advertised yesterday.) |

How ironic that out of eleven interviews, ten of which were either failed or not ARC-sponsoring jobs, I chose THIS one as the inspiration for my cynical, PO'ed comic. And this was the job I ended up getting.
Sometimes, the world makes no sense. |

Oh, the irony! They liked you after all. Sometimes we can never tell what they are thinking or laughing about.... |

Yes, by the time they get into the teenage years the Taiwan cultural programming has begun to have its effect on them. That is, they are on the road to becoming good little robots. |

BRILLIANT!
I also vent my frustrations by drawing comics. I had an Aussie buddy, we used to get together at a cafe and spend the afternoon drawing. |

Haha, thanks.
Incredibly, I actually managed to get the job. I guess none of the other candidates were any better at making these girls talk than I was. More than two months and I've managed not to get myself fired, and the rate of pay is decent for this economy.
However, the class on which I based this comic, CE6, is still as quiet as ever.
Once they start wearing uniforms, they become silent.
Not to be a sexist or anything, but I truly can't figure out what goes on in the heads of uniform-wearing Taiwanese girls. They're just fine until they start wearing the damn white shirts/plaid with a serial number. Then they become totally, utterly silent. One girl in the class, Cherry, still hasn't transformed, but once she does, it'll be like a morgue... |

I eagerly await the next episode in the Teacher Mark saga.
In the mean time, I'm getting a scanner and posting my one-paneled cartoons. |

Hi guys,
This thread rocks.
Hope everyone will continue posting on this 'human' side of teaching English in Taiwan.
Some very keen (and funny) observations so far. Stantord....

As promised, I've started scanning my single-paneled cartoons.
Only three are up at the moment, but more will follow.
They're not exclusively about Taiwan, but rather whatever comes to mind.
