|
|
Hello, I would like to teach in Saudi Arabia. I have a Masters Degree and have taught English in Korea for nine years. I'm ready for a new experience. I contacted 'Teach Away' but they said Mid-East jobs require a teacher's certificate - which I don't have! Are they correct, or is just the schools that Teach Away deals with that require a teacher's certificate?
I would really like to teach in Saudi, Bahrain, Egypt or the UAE. Can anyone recommend a recruiter and/or school that I might contact in one of these countries.
Thank you kindly in advance,

Most jobs require at least a CELTA or similar. Sometimes if your MA is related to EFL Teaching you can circumvent that. |

I worked for SALTS/Raytheon with a BA and graduate degree unrelated to teaching English plus five years experience. Others I worked with had comparable (or less) credentials. I did not have a CELTA or teaching certificate. So, unless things have changed since '04, you sound qualified to me.

Forget recruiters...all of 'em. Your best bet is to buy a new suit and a ticket to the UAE for TESOL Arabia in the spring. You can interview with many of the better institutions directly that way, and avoid the recruitment scams. |

With a Masters and teaching experience, many of the Universities in Riyadh would be interested in hiring you. Try PSU www.psu.edu.sa, DAU www.dau.edu.sa, and Al Yamamah www.yu.edu.sa.
Good luck. |

Well I have known teachers with years of experience and PhD's who were told to go and get a CELTA. |

Surely it should be
"Where does one begin one's search?"
or
"Where does one begin the search ?" |

That's because they didn't have any other EFL teaching qualification. |

Dear scot47,
"Surely it should be
"Where does one begin one's search?"
or
"Where does one begin the search ?"
Not if the writer has MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder.)

I'm in a similar but slightly different situation. BA (not in English) and CELTA plus ten years experience (all in Poland). I'm looking for a job in the Middle East - KSA appeals for various reasons, none of them unusual.
I've looked through most of the posts on this forum, and it seems a lot of people have been unhappy with their employer - the worst places to work seem to be pretty well covered here, though there's a dearth of information about the best places.
My question is, which are the best places to apply, for someone with a non-English BA and CELTA? And would the subject of my degree (Theology and Religious Studies) prove problematic?
Another piece of information that I haven't been able to find out about here is the timescale of an application in KSA. For August/September 2010, should I be applying now?
Finally, I wonder how precise employers/recruiters are about references. The company I work for now will happily provide one, but my employer for most of my time here went bust a couple of years ago. I was the DOS for my last 3 years there so the reference would have to come from the school's owner, but he's semi-retired now and uses a webmail address - he's genuine, but his email address doesn't suggest that. Would it be a problem?
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! |

Thank you Scott. I noticed the same thing. I'm glad I'm not the only who still entertains the quaint notion that English teachers should try to use the language correctly.
We KSA veterans know that the motivated, serious, hardworking students who attend KSA's many first-rate educational institutions will accept nothing but the best. |

Yes and we know that you can spot the dedicated students in class here. They are the ones who have a pen with them. |

Surely it is dedicated teachers who bring pencils for the students. It still makes me laugh at the righteous indignation of the saudi student when expected to provide his own pencil. |
